I get so mad at the news reporting media these days. There is so much speculative, as opposed to factual, reporting that generates fear in people. My concern is that a lot of what I read in the headlines is not fact but it gets into the collective subconscience and I am concerned that we will manifest bad stuff. IP: Logged |

That is a very valid point, and I find I am in agreeance with it!Therefore, let it be known that factually, within us all, is the spark of the divine, and we should nurture it, and spread it amoungst us all.... and treat each other beautifully, whether the world says its ending or not. IP: Logged |

thirteen I am definitely with you here, news is basically sensationalism, I swear. It was really nice to see firsthand that tv news channels do not cover all the facts - a few years ago I saw with my own 2 eyes a highway rollover, some college kid rolled his Ford Explorer across 3 lanes into a tree and a motorcycle was involved...the media never covered what occurred with the motorcyclist or whether a motorcyclist was even involved, it was like he never even existed. Nice, huh? And the paper here consistently covers news stories about how the town I live near is supposedly going to build this and that store, none of them ever get built. IP: Logged |

I am over-simplifying here, but this is a case of cause and effect. To only blame the media is a little naive--the media print/report what people buy. In the U.S., we are far more interested in watching Michael Jackson's trial than some of the more serious stories, like Sadaam's fate, the war on Iraq, etc. So which is the cause, and which is the effect? I don't have the answer. But I'd say we sell more copies of the National Enquirer than the New York Times. I'd also like to correct the notion that this idea of the media reporting sensationalistic news is new. It's not. We all know the word 'muckraker,' and its history is long. I work in the media, and have done some research on this very subject. The media has always thrived on sensationalism, because the public loves it. So which is the cause, and which is the effect? As far as speculative vs. fact. Well. In the 70's, the Washington Post relied on Deep Throat's fact/speculation to bring down a U.S. president for his illegal activities. There is still nothing to support that Iraq ever had weapons of mass destruction. So was it fact, or speculation on the government's part that led us to war? No answer necessary. IP: Logged |

That was another thought I had on this issue..Why are people so drawn to sensationalism and fear?????? I don't know. Maybe it's more interesting than the hum drum of everyday existence or something.IP: Logged | |
