ONLY IN AMERICA: Only in America.....do drugstores make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy peopl e can buy cigarettes at the front. Only in America......do people order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke. ! Only in America......do banks leave both doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. Only in America......do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. Only in America......do we buy hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. Only in America......do we use the word 'politics' to describe the process so well: 'Poli' in Latin meaning 'many' and 't ics' meaning 'bloodsucking creatures'. Only in America......do they have drive-up ATM machines with Braille lettering. EVER WONDER ... Why the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin? Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed? ! Why don't you ever see the headline "Psychic Wins Lottery"? Why is "abbreviated" such a long word? Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"? Why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, and dishwashing liquid made with real lemons? Why is the man who invests all your money called a broker? Why is the time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour? < /P> Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food? Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes? Why do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? You know that indestructible black box that is used on airplanes? Why don't they make the whole plane out of that stuff?! Why don't sheep shrink when it rains? Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If con is the opposite of pro, is Congress the opposite of progress? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? IP: Logged |

Oh, I love this one: quote: Why women can't put on mascara with their mouth closed?!
And this: quote: Why is it that doctors call what they do "practice"?
If only doctors would keep that one in mind, they would "practice" with more humility... Also, on a darker note: Only in America... is the government too incompetent to act swiftly and effectively in time of national disaster, making footage of New Orleans look in the eyes of the whole world like this is a Third-World Country we are living in, and not the richest nation on earth. those are hilarious!Paejie, Oh and I don't mean this in a mean way, but I believe Yank is an outdated name...there are many in the north who don't agree with how things are being handled as well. It is very sad indeed Again no offense, I'm just from the north so I had to chime in. IP: Logged |

Things are too quite. (tounge in cheek)I have to live with being called a Pom and a Limmie, so I reckon you can live with being called a Yank. Anyway I think it is perfect, because us foreigners are aware how those in the US-of-A just love to 'Yank' their own chain. IP: Logged |

I remember once when I was younger I was visiting my family in Colombia. Some idiot kid called me a yankee. Within seconds he was on the floor crying because I had slapped him in the face. Oh well. Shut your mouth then.

You slapped him in the face ? Was this to prove it? But, looking at Iraq and such places, that does seem to be the Yankie way. Tolerance and compassion seem very absent. Yet laughing at somebody's mistake can be more productive than attacking them. Lol, IP: Logged |

Ahh, yes, but let us not forget one of the most inspiring films of all- Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'- where we can learn many, many wonderful truths.Remember the scence where he wakes up (after eloping with 'Judith') and open the shutters to greet the day in full glory....only to find a crowd has gathered outside.... He trys to explain....("blah blah blah"):- "you are all INDIVIDUALS" "yes, we are all individuals!" etc, etc......... just more waffle for you to contemplate IP: Logged |

Um, just to clear up a little confusion here...The slow Federal response to the hurricane damage was because the states had to ask for help first. States' rights do still exist in some form. Even before the storm, President Bush tried to tell people to evacuate and he got slapped for it. If you watched the news closely enough you would have seen Federal response occurring in Alabama and Mississippi well before Louisiana (not just New Orleans). That's because those states called for help before Louisiana did. It's a tragedy and horror what has happened in the Delta land. Blaming the government for someone else's mistake is not going to fix that. Much love to y'all. LLL IP: Logged |

I slapped him because he was an idiot. And well I'll do it again if I have to. My problem obviously. Unless you'd like to get slapped also. And unless you live here you have no right to talk about how people are here. People here just don't like taking crap from anyone. Oh well.
And like I said before I feel it's the govt's fault. This govt is a piece of crap. Scientists have been warning us for years about how New Orleans was below sea level and how somethihng like this would one day happen.
The government should of not have allowed anyone to live there in the first place.

We have national organizations like the Red Cross that have nothing to do with States and their permissions.FEMA has nothing to do with States and their permissions. Did you not see when CNN juxtaposed our government official saying "We had no idea it was going to be so bad!" with the weather channel warning "This is going to be the worst hurricane ever?" (I'm paraphrasing, but the essence is accurate.) Did you not see when CNN juxtaposed our government official saying "We just can't get in there!" with celebrities like Harry Connick Jr. and Sean Penn, who obviously got in there? And it was this sort of news that spurred the government to get in there. Our government should feel horrible shame for their response to this tragedy. I'm not fond of "yanks" either, Mystic Gemini, especially when used as a slur. IP: Logged |

Mystic Gemini - I love you, hon!! Anytime someone says anything that could remotely be read as support for the president and his administration you react like a rabid chihuahua. You're great. Thanks for the chuckle. Much love to y'all! LLL (I had to edit this because I had misread and thought I was reading Trillian instead. Love you both though) IP: Logged |
