Hey lioneye - Good to see you around.I already have through another organization I'm involved with. We actually have quite a few refugees here (we're about 5 hours away from N. Orleans; closer to Mississippi and the relatively few displaced people from Western Alabama) and several clubs/people are sponsering clothing, toy, and supply drives. A few people on post are harboring refugees (one with 14 + his family in their house...quite a feat with the size of Post Housing) and most hotels have given away rooms. There are even a number of foster animals. I will fess up to having only been involved in giving money and items, so no praise is necessary IP: Logged |

Hi, Prox. Yeah, my sister is a nurse in Baton Rouge, and she has been working around the clock in the last week. The population of Baton Rouge has doubled, maybe tripled in the past week. When she finishes her 16 hour shifts at the Our Lady on the Lake Hospital, she goes to the shelters to offer medical advise & supplies, and alot of hugs. (She's a 12th house Taurus sun with a 1st house moon) ...Needless to say, she is exhausted. Her daughter's fiance is in New Orleans, he's a member of the National Guard. He is exhausted and overwhelmed. He dissolved into sobs when she talked to him on the phone yesterday. It's so horrible there. I'm happy to know that you and your communtiy are doing your part. All I can do is donate money to the Red Cross. But I wish I could do more. Can I? What? That's what I'd like to know. IP: Logged |

It seems like not enough people care, or realize how massive this disaster is. They just want to live their own self absorbed lives, can't spare the brain cells to consider how so many of their own fellow humans are suffering.WAKE UP. THIS IS A TRAGEDY OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS. IP: Logged |

There isn't much we can do where I live (that I know of), except for donating money to the Red Cross, and giving away some clothes/household things. I wish I COULD do more, but I don't really know what. I'm not looking for praise by posting here either ~ I've been looking for ideas, and found a few things that I thought I'd post here, maybe others here can help out. Gift certificates ~ I just saw a woman on the television who stated that rather than sending in truckloads of toilet paper, people could send gift certificates, so that refugees could go and get what they need directly from a place like Walmart. I'm going to get back into knitting and crocheting, and see if I can contribute towards this: From BigPinkCookie.com: http://www.bigpinkcookie.com/2005/09/03/houston-food-bank "I’ve seen people post on their blogs that they don’t know who to give money to; every group can use your help, but the Houston Food Bank is actually coordinating the food drive efforts right here in Houston. For every $1 that you give, they can get $25 worth of food. Right now, they need help for the victims of Katrina - and no matter where you are at, you can help. Please consider making a donation to either the Houston Food Bank or America’s Second Harvest. Meanwhile, as I said in my previous post, I am collecting knitted or crocheted goods for the smallest victims. For right now, things such as baby bootees or small children socks are probably best; as we get more into fall, things like sweaters and blankets will be needed. I will take anything I receive to the Northwest Assistance Ministry to distribute to those in need. Leave a comment with your e-mail if you would like more details. Raid your stash, knit for the babies!" Michelle from A Small Victory is collecting school supplies. Kids of Katrina School Supplies drive: http://asmallvictory.net/katrina.html Hurricane Katrina Relief Auction at Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/groups/katrina_auction/ From that auction: http://www.flickr.com/groups/katrina_auction/discuss/81001/664314/ "Just a quick update too make everyone smile large and long.... our current pledge tally is... jeez i feel like jerry lewis during the telethon... drum roll please... after four days you folks have raised... $11,699.00!!!!!!! thanks, get back to work." http://cdbaby.com/group/redcross The musicians in this gallery have chosen to donate their ENTIRE wholesale price to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund. I know that with the pictures and CDs, you could just donate that money, rather than spending it on products, but it can double as a donation and gift if you see anything you like for friends and loved ones (christmas presents/birthdays). I don't know if Payless is still having their "Buy one, get another pair half-off" sale, but if they are, there's another idea should anyone be going shoe shopping (you could donate the second pair if you don't really need them yourself). I need to get away from the computer, but if I find anything else, I'll post a link. IP: Logged |

On Sunday, our tribe The Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, is hosting a "help the suvivors" dinner for the public at the THREE FIRES CONFERENCE ROOM...at our casino....this info is going out via three local newspapers...Cost of the dinner.....either a donation of money or supplies...or both....that's the entrance ticket to get in.... This is being held in conjuntion with the wonderful efforts of The First Tabernacle Church here in Manistee....their congregation has donated two huge trucks...and we're committed to loading them up....If it turns out there are not enough trucks for what we hope to send, our tribe will provide those as well...I HOPE WE HAVE A CARAVAN!!! I'm planning to be there - with my donation..... It's also my son Tom's birthday....not to mention "other 9/11 anniversaries"...*sigh* Love, Rainbow ps...I believe there is something in the works for bringing some of the survivors to our town also....I'll report more...when I hear more... I have donated money. The Red Cross seem to really need that the most at the moment. One of my best friends is getting married this month. Can you guess what he and his wife are doing for their honeymoon? Volunteering IP: Logged |

Awesome, guys...just awesome. So far I have convinced 8 people to donate to the Red Cross (just people I know in real life - I have no idea if anybody has donated as a result of this thread) Even a dirt poor wannabe actor I know donated $30 on his nearly maxed out Visa. IP: Logged |

LyonEye....Yesterday I went to our "dollar store" (I live on a fixed income)....and bought five bottles of shampoo, five packages of bar soap, five tubes of toothpaste, five cans of bath powder, and five packages (in packages of three)of toothbrushes.. I know it will only make a small dent in what is needed, but I know they can use everything. ...anyway, that is what I donated so that I might eat the special dinner given by our tribe....they also raised almost two thousand dollars in checks and cash, at the time I was there...(this all goes on the two trucks donated by the church) In addition to this dinner in conjunction with the church....our tribe also sent out two trucks of their own with five thousand dollars worth of supplies.... I'm so glad we could help... Love, Rainbow

I work for the health department and we are organizing a food and clothes drive. Our state agency is already on alert accepting evacuees (our county is on standby to accept more people, in which case my division will be mobilized since we are rapid response / emergency response).Bisbee (where I work)is holding a fundraiser at the local museum where all the proceeds will go to help the victims / recover effort. I am also waiting word (my unit is) about whether we will be going in the next few weeks to relieve other health care workers / officials. IP: Logged |

Hi, Pidaua How's it going, my lovely? Nice to see ya! Yeah, if I had the opportunity to go, I would so go. My sister wants me to take 2 weeks vacation and come down there with the Red Cross. I'd love to, but I'm at this transition point in my carreer, and I'm just not able to right now. I know you could do a great deal of good there. There's tons of animals who have been abandonned/hurt/starved/traumatized...What sort of health care are you doing? Like, people health care?

Hi Lioneye... nope, I am in people health care now - Infectious diseases and dare I say (this makes people cringe) bioterrorism. In the first capacity I do run the Animal surveillance (specifically diseases transmitted from animals to humans) as well as communicable diseases and in the latter capacity- first response / emergency response. I am on the team that dispenses meds to the population in the case of an outbreak (or natural disaster).I am not sure when they would have us go, but more than likely it would be to ensure everyone is properly medicated and the monitor the disease outbreaks / clusters. Actually, I would do whatever they needed, even if was handing out water bottles or clipboards to gather information. Right now we still have to wait for the LA and Fed first responders to do their jobs and then they will begin the process of rotating personnel out (such as the case with the nurses that have been working days on end without real breaks... ). I am glad you are doing well. IP: Logged |
