Oh dear.

Hunter and I went to do some grocery shopping. We were in the meat section. Generally, we don't eat a whole lot of red meat. We do eat quite a bit of chicken, though. At any rate - I was picking out some hamburger and Hunter picked up some pork chops and wanted to know what they were called. I told him and he said "Oh. It looks like ham."

me: Well it comes from a pig so it's pretty much like ham.

Hunter: A pig?

me: Yes.

Hunter: They take it off the pig like chop it off?

me: Yes...

Hunter: And the pig is dead?

me: Yes. And this hamburger is from a cow.

Hunter: A dead cow?

me: Yes.

Hunter: ... dead animals aren't good, Mom.

me: Well.. er...

Hunter: Love animals, don't eat them.

me: ...!!!...

Hunter: That makes me sad. Dead animals make me sad.

Goddammit that makes me feel guilty.

------------------

and this is judgement day, so why don't you stay -
and we're killing some time before it kills us anyway -
waiting for the new light...

You're no horrible person!

I remember having to explain these things to my kids. It is kind of awkward... and I came out feeling guilty too.

You did the right thing by being honest. That makes you a really good mom, and a great person!

awwwww.. I feel for you. I haven't had that one come up yet with my 4 year old, but I'm sure it will be soon.

How old is Hunter?

You know, come to think of it...I had that conversation with my daughter. She was so appalled by the idea of eating or hurting animals that she was determined to be a vet for about 3 years. From the time she was about 6 (which is when she made the connection) until she was about 9 or 10, she was going to be a vet. Then, it changed to musician when she was about 11 or 12. She's still on that one at 15. Pretty talented too.

Very much a true Venusian.

Thank you, LibraSparkle

<3

lovely - Hunter will be 7 years old in March

lioneye - I was going to be a vet for the longest time until I discovered that I'd probably faint if they brought in an animal that had been hit by a car or something. I just get too emotional!

You are actually NOT a horrible person. I know this.
So go ahead and try to justify it again, it simply won't gel because it isn't true.

So shut up.

What would make you a horrible person is if you were to tell him that and have no reaction to his reaction.
*your reaction is how you know you are a GOOD person.

Wow! BRM
You must be a great mom! Despite what you eat, your son is aware of what you really feel about the preservation of animals, and the trama they go through before they are slaughtered! Certian hormones are released when animals are slaughtered. They release negetive hormones that are imprinted on the foods we eat. Maybe listen to his intuitive foods that he feels are good for him. Ask and respect what he feels are safe, emotionally for him to eat. Besides candy and junk food. Children often feel what they should and should not eat. Push the raw veggies and explain they are happy to give of themself and are glad to give living (raw) energy and they do not suffer because they understand that the giving of pure energy and life force are good for them and the human race.
If you want more info, read the book "The Secret Life of Plants"
Truely inspiring book!
