Every so often, Dateline News does a show exclusively tracking sexual predators, in which they track them with a decoy, etc. I see the point in their reporting of the danger of these criminals, but at the same time, I find myself a bit disgusted by it. Some of these people have genuine psychological disorders, and it just seems as though NBC is exploiting this to get ratings. Really makes my stomach turn. What do you think? I guess it's true that they don't deserve sympathy for being child-molesters, but some of them just really have had a screwed-up life and/or mental state. IP: Logged |

I cant respond on the actual program..im from a differnt country..but i had a screwed up life and mental state because of sexual abuse.. If this program alerts one person i say great!! The majority of molesters are masked by the normality of life they lead most of the time.. You will often hear stories when people say they just didnt suspect them.. While it may turn your stomach..imagine what this person has done to to someone elses life..and could potentially do to another.. Maybe my stand point on this is jaded by my past.. but there is it just the same..IP: Logged |

I'm with Cancerian Moon. No "disorder" is excuse enough - if NBC or whatever can make ratings at the expense of those who would exploit the innocent, more power to 'em. Too bad all our worthless justice-system will give these perverts is jailtime, though.IP: Logged |

I think DATELINE is doing a great service too....It's the kind of beneficial thing that more TV shows should be used for...like AMERICA'S MOST WANTED....they've certainly caught a lot of criminals that might otherwise still be on the loose...And yes, it's sad that these predators are 'sick,' but I think our pity should first and foremost be for the victims they've harmed.... I've seen these Dateline specials.Having a daughter... I say it's a good thing. I think that anyone that is sexually interested in a 12 - 15 year old has issues. Some of the ones that are getting busted will surprise you: teachers, actors, firemen, etc. If it takes exploiting 1 or 2 to help protect hundreds, thousands of others... They arrested a guy that lives in the same city I work. He drove to another state to have sex with what he thought was a child. Yeah, some of them had hard lives, but is it any excuse to make anothers hard also? If it makes someone think twice about their actions, I think it's a good thing. Plus, I believe this program has made more parents aware of what can happen. I wouldn't want my daughter on-line talking to a 20 - 60 something year old pervert. Go to perverted justice web-site... they are the ones that organize the busts. It really will make you a little sick. Just because someone is a little unstable(which is a given) doesn't mean they should get away with this type of behavior. ________________________________________ Scorpio sun, venus, mars, mercury, and uranus Libra moon, pluto, and asc. Forgive me, I have Air in my chart...I dont believe in "excuses", I observe reasons. When you sincerely ask the question "Why?," and conscientiously look for an explaination behind the things that happen on the surface of life, you discover reasons, not so-called "excuses". People dont need to be forgiven, they need to be understood, and, so, accepted for being what they are (and not condemned for being something other than what we would prefer them to be). Just because natural disasters upset and devastate us, does not mean that global warming is an "excuse". It is a reason. And the same is true with us. Just because a person is deranged, and his actions affect us emotionally, to the point where we can only see him/her as a "monster", does not mean he has no reason for being deranged. Like it or not, everything has a reason for being what it is. Punishing people for being sick is sick. If we dont heal the predators, we will spend forever healing the victims. We must get to the root. And that means taking a look at ourselves. When we do not heal the predators, we are the predators. As for Dateline NBC, I dont care what their motives are. They are providing a needed service, and that is enough for me. Their motives are their own business. - hsc ------------------ "My friends, how desperately do we need to be loved and to love. When Christ said that man does not live by bread alone, he spoke of a hunger. This hunger was not the hunger of the body. It was not the hunger for bread. He spoke of a hunger that begins deep down in the very depths of our being. He spoke of a need as vital as breath. He spoke of our hunger for love. Love is something you and i must have. We must have it because our spirit feeds upon it. We must have it because without it we become weak and faint. Without love our self-esteem weakens. Without it our courage fails. Without love we can no longer look out confidently at the world. We turn inward and begin to feed upon our own personalities, and little by little we destroy ourselves. With it we are creative. With it we march tirelessly. With it, and with it alone, we are able to sacrifice for others." - Chief Dan George

I think that Dateline NBC does a great service for this issue of sexual predators. If one less 12 year old boy or girl is online w/o parental supervision, there's one less child that will be a target. What I don't understand, after these programs are aired, is why sexual predators are still finding prey? I, as a child who had an email account 20 years ago, was not allowed to chat online...and I could have on any local BBS in St. Louis. My parents knew better than to let me chat-they knew that alot of BBSes had adult content. Doh?! Ignorance of computers is no excuse. If you can't work one, don't have one in the house. So what's wrong w/the parents today? IP: Logged |

I do think it's great that NBC makes parents/children more aware of the danger, and help to, in some way, stop crimes before they can happen. But HSC's post pretty much summed up, in a more eloquently-written way, why I made this post. I agree whole-heartedly, HSC. IP: Logged |

Those shows really tick me off. Needed public service? No argument. Over and over again for the ratings? Disgusting. It's not about defending the criminals. It's about exploitation, which never sits well with me. My fiance loves the show. I see his reasoning as well. I just don't watch. I got it the first time. IP: Logged |

Drag the dark thing kicking and screaming into the light. I think some are "asking" for help. I think I saw the second one, did not see the most recent. They said that a couple of the guys had seen their first show and still took the chance. What's that quote... the worst evil in the world is when good people do nothing? If I go with my emotional response, I would say that the public humiliation is caused by their own actions, not DateLine's.IP: Logged | |
