It's a shame that every religious tradition has been distorted by misguided fundamentalists to the point that it has given religion itself a bad name.

But that is not religion. That is the stubborn misinterpretation of the outer forms of religion, and a consequent ignorance of the inner truth(s) which religion has tried to illuminate by making use of them.

To address the poetic intent of the post, I would say that if, in this case, religion means spirituality, to me it is life and it is Me. It is my Daughter and my Inspiration. It is love. And I find prayer everywhere.
