in the land of the free? Even in this godforsaken hellhole of a UK prison it's not against the law.

Because it makes driving even more of a nightmare than it already is in Los Angeles.

When pedestrians haphazzardly dart out into traffic, people get hurt and/or killed. Then, the driver is held accountable - Some laws are in place just to protect people from the effects of stupidity.

Can someone define 'jaywalking' for me?

Ids it simply crossing the street without a pedestrian sign/crosswalk in a straight line? Or is it walking diagonally across traffic, like at a four way, you go between both the roads?

It sounds like an extremely silly question, I know.. but I really don't know.

I guess it's just cutting across the street somewhere other than a cross-walk.

We all do it, but you wouldn't want to do it on the 401, or any busy street for that matter.

It's one of those "relative" laws, of course.

Small towns don't generally worry about it.

I uphold the right of every man to get run over in his own fashion(women too of course). Sounds a sensible thing, but I'd like to know if we have more traffic accidents than you do. I bet we don't

It's walking across the unmarked area of the street not designated for pedestrians. It's to protect ourselves from ourselves.

and...what everyone else said
