Hi! I am planning a trip to Canada with friends in October. We are thinking of visiting Toronto and Ottawa and of course, stopping to see the falls. Is there enough to do/see there or should we drive on in to Montreal and Quebec City? I would appreciate any tips or opinions! Thanks! IP: Logged |

Hi mysticaldream,How long do you plan on staying? October is usually a lovely time of year because all the leaves change colour then, so it makes for a scenic road trip (but more so on the small highways and side roads north of the lakes shore). If you have time Montreal and Quebec City is not too far from Ottawa. http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/B2C/00/default.asp http://www.quebecregion.com/e/ I dont know if youve already checked this website out or not... http://www.ontariotravel.net/TcisCtrl?site=consumers&key1=home&language=EN There's always lots to see in Toronto... http://www.toronto.com/ Ottawa of course youd have to check out the parliment buildings! http://www.ottawatourism.ca/forms/index.asp?intSite=1 The drive from Niagara Falls to Toronto is around an hour and a half by highway 401. From Toronto straight to Ottawa, also via 401, takes about 3 1/2 hours. And from Ottawa to Montreal it doesnt even take 2 hours...and to Quebec city it would be at the least another 2 hours. Thank you so much Daydream! That is exactly what I was looking for. I guess I should be practicing my French for Montreal. My last French class was in college in 1993 (my age is showing here, haha). Do you think we should at least attempt French in Montreal or will English be acceptable? Thanks again! IP: Logged |

English is somewhat acceptable... the signs are mostly bilingual, with the exception of some highway signs, which are ouest/est/nord/sud... but you can understand that...I found Montreal completely gracious! I would go again in a heartbeat. IP: Logged |

There's lots to see & do in Toronto; you've got to see the CN Tower, the tallest free-standing structure in the world! with the Skydome below, and Casa Loma if you get a chance. And when you're in Ottawa, across the river is Hull with the gorgeous Museum of Civilization (the architecture alone is worth seeing; when i was at the University of Ottawa, we had our spring formal there ). They also have those hour-long cruises that take you from Ottawa to Hull. Downtown Montreal is reminiscent of Paris, with the quaint cobbled streets. The Biodome (I think they changed the name to the Ecomuseum) is a must-see if you go there (well, if you like that sort of thing); they recreate several different habitats & have so many species of animals & birds; it's a funky indoor zoo. I could go on... there's so much to do there, depending on your interests. IP: Logged |
