All I can say, as a former equestrian, that the sidesaddle is a European invention of the Renaissance era and afterward, designed so a lady could wear a dress/skirt and not have to impolitely sit upon a rude beast with her legs splayed apart, lest her modesty be violated by the *ahem* stimulation. Of course, this was during a time and in a culture when any discussion of private parts was also impolite, so any discussion of men making themselves vulnerable to "intimate" injury by sitting astrided a horse in the more customary fashion was likely never brought up. Besides, men were allowed to travel further than women, and also often expected to be able to do various tasks on horseback, such as do battle. A sidesaddle is neither good for balance or long distance. In fact, it's pretty damn uncomfortable for your hips. The Persians and Mongols - the cultures from which Europe largely inherited its horseback riding traditions - were smart to not fuss over sexual modesty when it came to the practicality of riding a horse.
