carlfloydfan I just wanted to let you know I'm still peeking into this thread and checking out the bands you posted about, I LOVE checking out bands I haven't heard of before. It's just taking me awhile as I'm slammed with a research paper but I will probably come back and tell you which ones I like I love letting people know when they turned me on to a band.

"I can stomach almost any kind of music, if it has an agreeable harmony, unlike some bands mentioned here produce."

I don't get this sentence. so you don't like most of the music mentioned in here? I don't get the wording...especially the bold

GN

bands, no... PEOPLE, have always been exploited. Things will always be about image to some. Even in the late 80s, indie was image to some. It may be harder to find a legit indie band these days, I agree but rock is not dead and neither is indie. There are still many DIY bands, aka lo-fi as I mentioned.

Mainstream was never 100% bad IMO (though maybe 98%). For example, I have no problem with Built to spill moving to a major label. who cares if they lose the indie label, their first cd on a major label, perfect from now on was amazing. and, even on a major label, you can still be adventurous and have that indie spirit even without the label, like Perfect. In the end, it is the spirit, doing something new. Indie, like anything else, does not stand still, it evolves. we can never be stuck in the late 80s/early 90s indie days, that would be boring. Indie will evolve to the point where it will withstand a larger barrage from the major labels, it will be more about spirit and adventurous music.

My point is, major labels won't kill the SPIRIT of indie. though it will make it into an image thing a lot more too, a shallow thing much more I agree. It is up for the listener to discern who they want to listen to. Indie is subjective too, as many have proven here. But I go for the feeling, the adventure in the songs, doing something new. Like prog rock of the early 70s. Built to spill maintained the indie FEEL and SPIRIT minus the label, on perfect from now on. Thats what I call indie.

glad to turn you on to music. Suggest away yourself, I would love to find new bands. Again, I enjoy the vibes from bands like Aloha or umphreys mcgee. so are you a taurus sun and virgo moon/asc?? My gf is taurus sun and virgo moon, if that is the case. she is such a perfectionist but I love her for it.

not indie (post rock), but Yndi Halda is amazing. Beautiful music. Just look at two of their titles:

A Song For Starlit Beaches
Illuminate My Heart,My Darling

Yeah, CFF, glad you like Aloha. They really have an interesting sound and, dare I say, unique. All of their albums are quite progressive. Definitely one of my favorite bands.

Also, check out Denali's "The Instinct" if their self-titled album didn't rock enough for you. I find many of the tracks on The Instinct to be a bit harder rocking. I just love Maura Davis's voice- edgy tone, great vibrato, and with occasional, rather orgasmic, squeals.

Funny you mention Umphrey's McGee. I saw them at the first Bonnaroo festival, and for a while on their band's homepage, there was a picture of my buddy in a full-headed frog mask posing with the band at 'Roo, smoking a blunt that I rolled. It was great... ah, memories...

I have Denali's s/t album. It is pretty good I would say, though I enjoyed Aloha more.

Can I offer up

Hope of the states - Lost Riots
Aereogramme - Sleep And Release * which is a crazy cd with so many varying moods. It will go from lush orchestra and stunning beauty to hardcore screaming frenzy. Overall, a beautiful cd. Get it for the many moods.

Not to spit into anyone's soy-foam-hazelnut-double-latte....

but "indie" is an image.

When I hear "indie", what i see in my head is a montage of all the guys with their precious sloppy shagged haircuts and black horn rim glasses, carrying identical messenger bags with their laptops maxed out with gigs of obscure music no one but the other guys carrying messenger bags have ever heard of.

They sit in coffee shops all day long, sucking up free WiFi dressed in thrift shop chic that really isn't thrift shop, all stripey shirts and cargos in save the earth tones....and look down at anyone who isn't "indie" enough for them.

The image has been exploited. its all over the place, and the word 'indie' has replaced grunge, New Wave, goth, metal, house, whatever- insert your genre here.

This is not a personal attack on anyone, for music preference is so individualized.

did you read all the posts Motherkonfessor? Multiple people have said that already. I did, in a way. Please read more carefully, as your point, though good, is not new in this topic. Just a few posts above you, I made a point similar to yours in reply to GN who said the same thing as you.

Hoho,
"obviously I am not indie enough."
second person to put words in my mouth tonight. never said that. never said you were not welcome, not for me to decide anyways, even if I could I would never say that, I am a welcoming person in fact.

I was being kind, sorry the internet is not good for expressions/emotions, ect. Don't read into what I said to much. I can't stand indie twits myself. In no way was I being holier than thou.

All I wanted to say was, it seemed like you were talking in a way that no one else had mentioned that. But we (a lot of us at least) realize that. I said it was a good point too. for sure. but already made.

do stay.

By 'some bands' I obviously meant 'Pavement'.

I loathe them. Always have.

Honestly,

Carl,

I think you might like this site: ilike.com. It's turning me on to some good indie music.
