"You won't last more than 5-10 minutes in those cold waters," said the man with the hat and badge, when he told us we needed lifejackets. We spent all afternoon hunting for them, and got back to Walden with only 20 minutes to spend in our canoe, as it turns out, a rather un-sea-worthy vessel. We must have been less than 50 yards out from the shore (thank god), when it tipped. We struggled to keep it afloat, but it sank like a (canoe-shaped) rock. "The Canoe!," said Rachel, still struggling. "F*** the canoe!" said I. And we made it back to dry land, shivering, drenched, and embarrassed. ((That's about it.))

Happy that things turned out okay and you made it safely back, HSC Waldon's Pond is a pretty big pond and very beautiful surroundings. Your post reminded me of Henry David Thoreau's writings in his Journal where he related that someone had told him that a man was found drowned in Waldon's Pond. Thoreau stated in his journal, " What a horrible thing to do to a river." A satellite image from space of Waldon's Pond in Concord, MA: Waldon's Pond at sunset in 2005: IP: Logged |

thanks, all. artlovesdawn,
thank you. yeah, this "canoe" was skinny, and probably not even flat on the bottom. We had to balance so carefully. The slightest shift brought the rim so close to the water. I had a bad feeling about it right away. I should have listened to myself, but Rachel was so psyched to try out her new canoe, and I didnt want to look like a coward. Learned my lesson, I think. s
