This is a beautiful program, I have been blessed enough to have vollunteered for in both the states of California and Nevada. In both instances I met many adults that were embarrassed and ashamed for years regarding their lack of literacy compared to others and I watched them develop, florish and fill with delight as their fears, disabilities and embarrassment vanished. In every instance, absolutely every instance -I witnessed amazing growth and love being shared. I have continued friendships throughout the years with several previous clients. [ A bond is built in an amazing way when someone is so vulnerable and another helps them realize the strengths within...] I would say YES, YES, YES! If you [or] anyone you know is seeking to grow, develop, and build their self esteem this is a powerful opportunity for all parties involved.

When I joined Americorps VISTA ( Volunteers In Service To America ) in 1995 it was a literacy program in my area who sponsored me. Among my other duties with the literacy program I tutored reading and writing and also taught ESL. I found that ESL was tougher to teach. People would be amazed to discover how many people are functionally illiterate. Even in affluent areas. The reason for that is what you stated YFIS, people are embarrassed about it and they learn ways to fake it in order to get through life. It's very true that a real bond is developed between the tutor and the student. Which makes it all the more rewarding and enjoyable IP: Logged |
