Cancergg, I thought the thread you started had the potential to be a very intriguing discussion about the male/female dance of ages....I'm so sorry it got de-railed like that. Maybe you can try to open that discussion up again in the future, and maybe people will actually be able to talk about the topic at hand instead indulging in their own personal grandstanding. (mental masterbation kind of thing) Yeah. sorry about that. I don't come around here much anymore- seems toxic lately.

Gotta love Einstein, Blue. "Where the world ceases to be the scene of our personal hopes and wishes, where we face it as free beings admiring, asking, and observing, there we enter the realm of Art and Science"
"Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The latter cannot understand it when a man does not thoughtlessly submit to hereditary prejudices but honestly and courageously uses his intelligence." "I should've been a plumber."

I like Einstein but had he been a plumber instead we wouldn't be facing a nuclear arms race and possible nuclear annihilation. I like what he said when he witnessed the first nuclear test. "My God, what have I done?" edited: "The one great mistake in my life," Einstein later lamented, "was when I signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending that atom bombs be made." On 4 November 1954 Albert Schweitzer received the Nobel Prize in Oslo. He used his acceptance speech to warn of the growing nuclear danger. Einstein asked him to make use of his international celebrity and call for an end to atmospheric nuclear testing. Einstein died in 1955, but his urgings fuelled Schweitzer's anti-nuclear energies for the rest of his life.

That's doubtful. If he hadn't done it, most likely somebody else would have in the last sixty years, and it might not have been an American. For all we know, if it weren't for him, we'd all be crispy critters (or Nazis) right now. The fault is with politicians who make use of such weapons, when a demonstration of their efficacy would suffice. Schweitzer was a great man, truly.
"Constant kindness can accomplish much. As the sun makes ice melt, kindness causes misunderstanding, mistrust, and hostility to evaporate." "Whoever is spared personal pain must feel himself called to help in diminishing the pain of others. We must all carry our share of the misery which lies upon the world." "A man does not have to be an angel in order to be saint." - Albert Schweitzer

So not only was he a genius, but a good person. IP: Logged |

Yes, DL, that's why he was such a great man. He combined his genius with a conscience and spirituality. When he realized the possibilites of his discovery which lead to the atom bomb, and witnessed the horrors it unleashed when it was used in Japan, he spent the rest of his life trying to rectify that one mistake/regret in his life. He was not a perfect man though. He was married but had about 15 mistresses. Jay Leno said " Einstein not only came up with the "Big Bang" theory, he lived it. " IP: Logged |

Yeah, I've heard about his romantic woes....he was one slippery pisces. But given his other great contributions, I choose not to focus on that aspect of his life. Poor guy though, the whole thing must've weighed heavily on his heart and mind (especially after Hiroshima). IP: Logged |
