I have some new neighbors that are loud and obnoxious. I'm glad that most rarely stay more than a few weeks there, and the rare exceptions only last a few months (like 3-4)...and that it stays empty much of the time. I won't go into why they're so annoying, just a theory I came up with as I heard them shouting for a few hours tonight, again, and frequently using the word f*** in its variations a lot (eg, f***ing trash, **** if I know, shut the **** up, etc), along with other profanities. Because they drink (and I think drug) so much, and they seem to be pretty dull mentally, I think that the word not only gives more emphasis (along with the shouting) to what they're trying to say, but using the word so often gives their brain precious extra seconds to find another coherent word to use. You describe my neighbors! I wonder if they think yelling and screaming makes them make more sense. It is even weirder when they try to shout over their loud music and barking dogs and screaming kids.IP: Logged |

I am a reformed shouter. I swear too, definately for effect thats true. Shouting i think for me growing up was the only way to be heard. We had four kids, two adults in the small house and you had to shout to be heard. Or you had to shout before anyone would help you out. I think i never realized till i got married that there is another way to communicate. I admit i did laugh when i read these posts because that is me. Well was me, im a lot better now.IP: Logged |

thirteen While not a shouter anymore, I do at times forget to watch my sound levels when excited, and talk too loud. I grew up in a household with 11 kids and 3 adults in a 3 bedroom house, one small bathroom, a eat in kitchen, and a living room where Grandma slept. So I can definitely relate to what you said! quote: Shouting i think for me growing up was the only way to be heard. We had four kids, two adults in the small house and you had to shout to be heard. Call me a snob but over-use of the F-word denotes a verbal cripple in my mind..... Sure I have friends who use the F-word for emphasis, but not 3 times in one sentence My favorite F-word sentence is from Edward Abbey ("The Monkey Wrench Gang"), where Hayduke yells with glee after sabotaging a piece of road construction equipment: "That f-ing f-er's f-ed!!" Having taught High School English in the past I think I have a good handle on the language, and I agree that mostly people who overuse cuss words usually can't think of anything better to say, however when I am pxxsed off I love to say "fxxkety, fxxk, fxxk, fxxk!" Makes me feel better every time and have a little giggle too - I got it from Cartman on South Park IP: Logged |

I can't stand loud people either, especially people who don't seem to have an inside voice. So annoying.I grew up in a family with 5 kids, so that theory isn't necessarily true. In fact, my mom had to reign in my noisy tendencies due to babies sleeping. IP: Logged |

My husband grew up with 12 children and two adults, he talks very loud and used to swear alot , I grew up with one brother and three sister which totals 5 kids and 2 adults, but having a Virgo mother I wasn't really exposed to swearing or bad language, and I hate yelling . IP: Logged |

I agree TOTALLY. Using the F-word and other profanities is a sign of a limited vocab and lack of imagination. There are so many words that one can use to insult a person than saying F-U, and it always makes me laugh when someone says that to me because it is the least offensive word ever. What does it really mean? it's like some crazy driver flipping me off on the road, all I ask is: "and so?" Besically, F-word users are a field-day for me! I can have so much fun with them. I could not bring myself to say the F word until I was almost 30 years old. It was only after hearing it on the factory job floor for over a decade that I finally could vocalized it. It is still easier to write it than to say it however. And anyone who tried to use it as a word synonymous with love making or sex definitely got written off my list. Blecch! If a man needs to resort to saying the F word in his seductions, I want no part of him ever. I prefer to usually keep it reserved for describing truly disgusting or nasty manipulative low social morals people and actions. The exceptions are if another uses it casually in conversation I may at times echo them, but it feels weird doing that usually. In speaking I tend to substitute with such as, "bullfinch, bullcrap, fudge, frinker, horse hocky pucks, and so forth, ------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ }><}}}(*> <*){{{><{ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ IP: Logged |

When I was growing up loud talking but no yelling was normal. However swearing was not and would result in over the top kinds of punishment. Also loud talking was definitely not permitted at mealtimes! One would forfeit a meal if they talked too loudly then. Yelling would result in a punishment of hours of silence or more.------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ }><}}}(*> <*){{{><{ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ IP: Logged |

I’ve often associated it with lower class, until I went to high school. But it’s so funny, the upper class do it in the most fabulous way “dahhhling that boy you shagged was f***ing hideous. I hope you don’t hate me, you know I love you ever so much.”

I hate when people constantly drop the F-bomb. I also have huge issues with loud people- especially those that are loud AND they bounce around too much. It makes me nervous. LOL...

I have the same thing where i live Dervish. People rent next door as a holiday chalet, the rest of the time it is empty. I prefer it empty needless to say. You can get some really noisy buggers in there. Then it's time for one of MCM's notes through the door. Usually does the trick. People in there at the moment aren't that bad actually. Hopefully they'll have f*cked off by the end of September. ------------------ quote: ur perfect

Ok well i have read all the responses and if im truly honest with myself i do have to admit that a lot of swearing is a lack of imagination and/or a lack of the ability to creatively respond with full sentances. This is weird to me, i see it clearly now and i never ever considered it before. Another example here at Lindaland that a collective mind offers the greatest teaching.IP: Logged |

Yes, I get it... we all do it... but do I really have to hear the details. Share it if you must.. but don't get offended when I get up and walk out. __________________________________________ Scorpio sun, venus, mars, mercury and uranus Libra moon, pluto and asc.

I don't like noisy neighbors either and I have some two doors down. They are constantly talking loud, laughing loud, slamming doors, you name it. They just moved in a couple of years ago and other than them most of my neighbors are quiet. I only use the F word when I am very angry or frustrated. I agree that it is waaaaay overused these days. Fayte, I never liked it as a word for sex either. "Making love" is a much nicer way of expressing it. Don't like most of the other words applied to the sex act either. I agree that swearing in general and especially overusing that word is a sign of lack of intelligence. But it sure comes spewing out when you are really ticked off. Seems the only word that adequately can express just how angry you are at the moment. IP: Logged |

I tend to disagree. Most mentally handicapped people I know do not swear. It is usually the IGNORANT ones of average intellect who do it most, not the unintelligent ones. But even that cannot apply to everyone who swears. For some it is the environment they were raised in or peer pressure. For others, one can only guess as to why they swear alot. My beloved Granddad was a prolific cusser! Yet he was extremely intelligent! I was so very embarrassed when my dear sweet mother-in-law from my first marriage met him. I apologized to her for his swearing. She never noticed! The only reason I suppose I did was because my mother beat me bloody for even saying darn it. But it seems my Granddads's swearing was done so smoothly with emotional impact added, that it just rolled out of his mouth in such a way no one really noticed or cared. Also he never used the F word. More like...Damn, its hot! Or would you look at that crazy s..t. And so forth. ------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ }><}}}(*> <*){{{><{ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ IP: Logged |

My father was very intellegent. He was a crytographer, he created code for the military and government. Any way... his favorite phrase was: G D, SOB [I can fill in the blanks if you need me too) all at once. it was like one word. and very loudly. He was a loud person. I can be a little loud, but I attempt to control my potty mouth IP: Logged |

Bluemoon Your dad sounds like folks I know or have known who swear alot and some are very loud. Yet they have IQs in the above average to genius range and advanced educational degrees and all!------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ }><}}}(*> <*){{{><{ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~ ~~~ ~~ ~~~~~ ~~~ ~~~~ ~~~ IP: Logged |

I think that on the most part swearing is a bad habit that we pick up from society. I think that most people do swear at times of frustration or when angered. Barring some illness such as Tourette Syndrome, frequent swearing and yelling are symptoms of an agressive behavior problem. It is a sign of inner frustration and anger that hasn't been addressed and worked out by the person. They carry this anger and frustration with them through life and constant use of swear words and yelling outward ways they work it out on others. A person can have a very high IQ and still have a verbally agressive behavior problem. It all has to do with inner anger and frustration. But I think most people just have a bad habit of swearing regardless of IQ and only swear when they are angered or frustrated. When someone shouts a lot and every other word is a cuss word they are exhibiting an agressive behvior problem. It may not be true that a lack of intelligence goes along with frequent swearing but in society that is how other people see it. They see these people as having a limited vocabulary. I am not offended by swearing myself. Just the overuse of it along with shouting it out and there are some swear words that I wince at and do not like. IP: Logged |
