When mine were toddlers, certainly by 7 or 8...

As adolescents no later than 9 or 10...

As young teens...10 to midnight...

Now at their ripe old ages of 15 and 19...sometimes they do NOT go to bed!

I have always believed in a strict time for children to retire for the night...parents need their time too and unfortunately this often occurs when the kids are asleep...AND structure is never a bad thing..

Once they become teenagers...LOOKOUT!!!!!

Our son is just over 2 years old and his bedtime is 7pm. That is, he's tucked in at about 6:50-7pm though he often stays up a few minutes saying goodnight to his friends (toys) and arranging his bed in strange ways.

LOL Eleanore. Too cute!! My grand daughter is 9 now and still does that to her bed.

My grand kids vary. My son's kids are 11 and 6 and they go to bed at 8:00 during school and at 9:00 in the summer.

My daughter's kids are 10, 9 and 3 and go to bed by 9:00 during school and stay up until 10:00 or 10:30 during summer.

I am a believer in kids going to bed early too. Mine always had a set schedule and were in bed no later than 8:30 all year long. For the reasons that hippiechick stated in her post. Evenings were always my quiet times.

I never let them stay up later in the summer while school was out because I think that messes up their internal clock and it is too hard to get them back on a winter school schedule.

Hippiechick is right about teens!!! LOL Which is why high school kids fall asleep during class a lot.

ok, then that is it! mine are going on 12 and 10 in September, two boys...
They go to bed by 11:00 in the summer and they still complain! the bad part of it is that they have other friends that stay up later and keep calling late at night, so i was wondering if by any chance I was the one that was wrong, but I don't think so!

School time they are in bed by 10:00pm

Tonight if any of those hussies start calling them I will put an end to it! :<
Trust me!

Hey NAM

In my experience kids often tell you of what their friends are up to, allowed to do, but that is often not the case....

And I am pretty sure that if kids of your ages' friends are recieving calls late at night their parents likely do not know and if they do they are not the type of parents that you would want to be raising the friends of your children...ie: they do not know what their kids are up to...

But parenting styles are SO individualistic anyway!!!

Blessings

Terri

Nelly ~

Wow, 10 and 11 o'clock!! My 11yo would be a TOTAL crab if he stayed up that late
He's in bed at 9:00 on weeknights (summer or not) and 9:30 on weekends -- I agree with Mirandee on the circadian rhythms/inner clock thang..... CJ is up at 6:30 on weekdays and we both sleep in on weekends

"But Mom, the other kids get to....." is not a defense nor an argument at our house Perhaps turn the phone-ringer off at 9:00.....

The internal clock thing isn't really a good justification, though, because of daylight's savings time.

If a kid's getting up at 6:00 in the morning, and going to sleep at 9:00 during the school year, then when we "Spring Forward," for summer those hours become 7:00am and 10:00. I'm not saying that you shouldn't have a bedtime. I'm just saying that you're not necessarily saving your kid from anything if the shift is only due to the time change.

The internal clock still knows it is 8:00 PM even if we do set the clocks ahead an hour. For that reason a kid that normally is in bed by 8:00 would be sleepy at 9:00 because his internal clock is adjusted to be in bed at that time and does not know daylight savings time.

It is we who mentally alter our internal clocks. We used to eat dinner earlier and now eat an hour and a half later. I used to get hungry at the normal dinner time but now I don't get hungry until around the new dinner time. Same applies to sleeping and rising. We know the daylight savings time but our bodies don't unless we readjust our internal clocks.

NAM I cannot fathom any parent letting their children call other kids after 7:00 or 8:00 in the evening. I don't even call anyone later than 9:00 ( unless I know for sure they are up and that it is okay to do that ) because some people go to bed early. That's rude and bad parenting if the parents know. It's bad parenting even if they don't know if they haven't taught their kids better manners and to be considerate of others. I would flip out if anyone called my kids at those hours. That is if they were still kids and not adults.

Really not even teenagers who can stay up later should be calling anyone's home at late hours.

Before my son started school he went to bed at 11pm or midnight. Once school started he began going to bed at about 10pm. He is 8 years old now.
