Is this what the phone and electrical wiring really looks like in India?A friend sent me this forward and I am curious if these pictures are hoaxes or are they real? If they are real I would hate to work for the telephone company and have to repair them after a storm. New meaning to the word..."connectivity"

Brings me back memories hahahaYes Mirandee, sadly it is! But in major cities, everything is layed in cable as of today, so you don;t see those posts and wiring insanity where I live, or have lived - that is cities - but those still exist in many rural areas or smaller towns. Electricity still comes the same way to us, and you can also see the insane "internet" and "tv" cable companies done the same thing, wiring all over and haphazardly. When I go out, I shall shoot some pictures on the road I am at, and post for you to see. ------------------ If you are taking a walk through the garden of life What do you think you'd expect you would see? well...umm....its like in every city there would be some place where u cud see such a mess...(tho these pics r a little too extreme....i personally haven't seen something on this magnitude)....but no not on every street or corner....happens whenever there is a thunderstorm and some tree falls or something. this looks like a very old city/town.... you must remember that in india there is an acute shortage of space.....so everything is crammed into as little a space as possible...as a result anything that goes down, affects everything else around it IP: Logged |

Those are beautiful pictures, ILWL. Thanks for the nice slideshow. I have never been to India but I have seen many, many beautiful pictures of the country. No way did I think that the pictures I posted represented what all of India looked like. Outside of the wiring mess in this particular town for an old town it looks a lot better than many areas of Detroit. I could show you pictures of some of the areas of that city that would horrify you. IP: Logged |

I know Mirandee, i wasn't offended at all. actually these are the type of things that we indians are so used to, that half the times we don't even notice them. i guess a kind of defense mechanism. u even get attached to them....actually i was hoping for some more 'normal' pics of lucknow...u know showing what the streets look like...which give the feel of the city...but cudnt find them. i guess people dont put up 'boring' pics of that sort. those pics took me right back home....esp the last pic which i am almost certain was taken in Lucknow...there are many details there....the old buildings....the narrow streets...the cycle rickshaw....the auto rickshaw....the 'STD ISD PCO' board....now i am getting really nostalgic. You can find more pictures of Lucknow at this site where I got these pics, ILWL. http://search.pbase.com/search?q=Lucknow Now I have probably made you very homesick. I am like that. I get homesick for Michigan just going to Ohio for a day. I like traveling to different places but I am happiest when heading home. The closer I get to home the happier I am. I think that might be due to my cancer asc. IP: Logged |

Just noticed in that picture of the inner city of Detroit - the one with the gas station - you can see the telephone and electrical poles lined up along the street. That is how it is mostly here in Michigan and all the states in the U.S. where I have been. Canada too. Actually I never really notice wiring and telephone poles etc. until something like this brings the attention to it. True what you said, ILWL, we are so used to it that we mostly don't even notice it. Although over 50% of the state of Michigan is remote land and forests. Especially the further north you go. You know, this is kind of neat, showing pictures of where we live or our hometowns. Although I actually live 23 miles north of Detroit in the suburbs. IP: Logged |

hi mirandee...this is not the actualy way the electric companies wire the city... this is what street hawkers and illegal shop owners do to get electricity. they connect their shops this way and inturn pay bribe to the officials of the electric companies. IP: Logged |

Thanks for explaining that, TE. That does explain the haphazard way those wires look connected and the total tangled mess. I did notice that it was not like that at all in the pictures of the main streets of Lucknow. My husband told me that he has seen pictures of cities in Mexico that look the same as the pictures here taken in a town in India. So obviously they do the same thing there. Here in the U.S. it would be totally illegal to mess with the phone lines or electrical lines. You can go to prison for that. People have been jailed and fined heavily for attempting to steal internet connections from cable companies. That's almost impossible to do now but was a practice by people in the beginning of high speed internet. Now the companies know precisely who is using their internet connections. Corporate Big Brother knows everything! lol In the neighborhood that I live in we have underground cables for our electricity and cable internet. That is a more costly way for the electric and phone companies so it is not that widely practiced. It also makes it harder and more time consuming to get things fixed when problems arise. Here in the U.S. they would bottle air and sell it if they could like they do water and they would probably find enough people to actually buy it just by calling it purified air or putting new and improved on the bottle. I will have to take some pictures of the township I live in and post them, ILWL. LOL I didn't know that about Mahatma Gandhi Road. It's the same here in the U.S. only we just call those roads "Main Street."
