( uk autumn leaves are changing in pigmentation .. 2007 is standing out for some weather related reason )Nick Collinson, conservation policy adviser at the Woodland Trust. The Tree Council this week said global warming caused this season's (2004)russet reds to deep golden yellows. Leaf colour is determined by pigments which absorb some light wavelengths and reflect others. In summer leaves appear green because chlorophyll is the dominant pigment. When the days become shorter and cooler, chlorophyll production slows and other pigments dominate. "In a normal UK maritime climate, where there is plenty of moisture, the leaves start to produce a pigment called carotene in the autumn," says Collinson. This is the pigment found in carrots and makes the leaves appear yellow to orange. By contrast, places like Maine and New England have a continental climate with warm summers and cold, dry winters. "The lack of moisture in autumn means that a different pigment is produced called anthocyanin," says Collinson. This gives leaves more of a red colour. "Climate change models for the UK suggest we are likely to have hotter and drier summers, which will encourage the kind of colours you normally see in a New England fall." Vermont must have the prettiest of fall colorings .. ~ http://seasons.flyingdreams.org/joyoffall.htm ~ photo from .. ~ http://www.terragalleria.com/america/north-east/vermont/picture.usvt6522.html ~ IP: Logged |

Apple Pie by Emily P. November 7, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The leaves are changing just like pumpkins, There is a chill in the air, Fall is coming like a blink of an eye, The wind is rustling through my hair, Hot chocolate is on the stove, It is as hot as fire, My mom is making apple pie, The smell is to desire, My mom calls” it's ready!” I turn around and see apple pie, At the same time I hear a whistle from the kettle, My mom pours me a cup, I hear it sizzle, It's so hot it's bubbling just like soap in the shower, I have everything I wanted on a cold fall day in the kitchen!

In the Fall by Daniel C. November 4, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------- In the fall the leaves turn red, orange, and gold. They are as bright as light. The days end earlier, and trees become as bare as a squirel without fur. They cover the ground like a blanket on a child. In the house, the aroma of pie baking fills the air. I eat pumpkin pie after a dinner of mashed potatoes and stuffed turkey. Outside it smells of wet ground and rotten leaves. In the morning I hear the laughter of children waiting for buses. During recess people make big leaf piles. I feel a cold breeze outside, winter is coming.

Leaves Falling from my Window by Sammy S November 4, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------------When I look outside my window, beautiful colors I see. I hear the leaves falling and swaying around beside each other. I see my Dad raking them through the muddy moist grass. The leaves look like oil pastels. At recess we all bundle up like it's snowing out in sweaters to play in leaves and muddy fields. The children lie down and look at the clear blue sky. We go inside the warm classroom and drink warm cider. The apple cider going down my throat feels like a warm hug all through my body. I think how much I love fall. Once again, I look outside my window and beautiful colors I see. IP: Logged |

Fall Is Great by Lauren B. November 11, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I love the fall so very much The smell of wood burning calms me down I can see the leaves change as fast as people do. Red , brown, green, yellow, and gold too! I can feel the leaves crumple beneath my toes when I wonder barefoot. I love the sound of wind blowing and birds chirping. The leaves fall like paper on a windy day. It seems to me like leaves a re always playing tag. Whenever I think of fall, I can taste the turkey , the mashed potatoes ,and the deliousis pumpkin pie my aunt makes. Fall is great. I love fall

The Cycle of Leaves November 7, 2004 By Stephen D. -------------------------------------------------------------------When the leaves fall from the top of trees, it seems as if they fall from the twinkling moon. They gracefully flutter down like a butterfly. Crunch, crackle, swoosh is the sound of rustling leaves when you walk through them on a cold autumn morning. The leaves are raked into piles as high as mountains. Then winter comes and the leaves vanish under the white blanket of snow like a disappearing act. The trees sleep until the spring when the leaves come back to shade our world. IP: Logged |

Walking in the Forest by Ryan B. November 5, 2004 ------------------------------------------------------------------ I'm walking in the forest. Looks like leaves are dancing .They crackle like a fire. They fall all over me like feathers. The sky as blue as my eyes. The tree as bear as a bald headed jackrabbit. The taste of turkey like cotton candy. I smell the pumpkin pie coming from the kitchen. I'm walking in the forest.

Fall by Adam V.November 4, 2004 --------------------------------------------------------------- In fall you can hear the leaves crackling when you walk, like a fire on a cold winter's night. Try to feel the breeze against your face when you run fast like a leopard. Seeing deer in the forest is as exciting as seeing kids trick-or-treating. It is hard to get close to the deer for a good look because they can hear as good as an owl listening for its prey. Fresh pumpkin pie smells as delightful as brand new roses in the summer. And best of all, the turkey on Thanksgiving Day, tastes like hot food on a cold day. Fall is my favorite season of the year.

I love fall - finally cooler weather - Here in the South it is still in the 80's in October - I know it is fall when squirrels come to my window and look in...I have been feeding them nuts for the past few years, they come all through fall and winter...Some of them put their noses right on the glass and look in as to tell me "I want FOOD" I have 3 yorkies and when I either open the nut jar or start to open the window they bark like crazy to get rid of the squirrel....They may scare him for a moment but he comes right back and usually brings his family. My Squirrel Friend Listen! the wind is rising, and the air is wild with leaves, We have had our summer evenings, now for October eves! ~Humbert Wolfe
