In Africa, or where I come from, a direct translation of "old" when referring to a person, is "grown" and that title can be given to anyone who is wise, no matter how chronologically old they may be.

To wish someone to grow is a blessing here. And there is a saying, which the west would frown upon, which says: "Grow until you're back is hunched" again, a direct translation, it doesn't sound nearly as bad in Zulu.

Also, until recently, Africans don't really "look" old until they are in their hundreds... so "old" has nothing to do with appearance, but is a measure of a person's experience and wisdom, which is a good thing because these people are guides, counselors and comforters of the weary, because they have lived it, seen it, and know how to handle it.

It is an honour in Africa to be deemed an elder, because it is graduating to an elite club of the wise.

That's why, in Africa, if a person is a day older than you, they will rub it in your face because that instantly entitles them to being treated more revered than anyone else. It means the younger one is subject to being treated like a non-important asset.

It is in the West where youth is praised. not where I come from.

I am the youngest at home, which means I am the worm of the family... LOL. And I am the youngest even amongst my extended family, but my cousins have kids, which means I can finally take a break from getting refreshments for everyone, being sent to the shops ten times a day etc.

Being young is being a fool so to speak. nothing to be proud of.

So Zala, it was meant as a huge compliment and it was not in reference to chronological age.

That is what my 3/4 Cheerokee Grandmother said too!
All the seers and healers etcetera in the line(so I was told) were all born hunchbacks, clubfooted, and with a veil.
From the time I was able to understand, about 4 years old, I took it as a good sign. I was born with other signs too.

Just so you know, I wasn't necessarily talking about me because I KNOW I haven't posted nearly as much, in both quantity AND quality, as others on the site have. (I've been the "new kid" a lot and I know how that goes! lol) I was honestly thinking about some others on the site who I have seen make great contributions and, yes, maybe I should name them but I would truly feel bad if I left anyone out. So, I'm abstaining from the name game in favor of saying that the community as a whole is made up of some really great people!
