This e-mail is currently making the rounds:
quote:
When you are making out your Christmas card list this year, please include the following: A Recovering American Soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center (address, etc.)
Because there are a lot of kind, generous people at LL, I wanted to get the correct information out here.Sending holiday cards to soldiers is a wonderful idea, but it's logistically impossible. Any type of mail sent to an unnamed service member will be discarded unopened by military facilities, including hospitals. Heightened security measures put in place in 2001 are responsible for this.
If you are wanting to show appreciation and holiday spirit, Walter Reed recommends a monetary donation. There are over 300 nonprofit organizations to choose from on www.americasupportsyou.mil (this site also accepts care packages, stockings, etc.). You can also donate to: www.usocares.org, www4.army.mil/ocpa/tooursoldiers, or www.redcross.org.
If you would like to send small presents to Walter Reed patients, that can be done through the Red Cross. Things like phone cards, small sealed candy packets, CDs, etc. are always welcome. Not to be pushy, but kids love putting together small packages of goodies and it can be an inexpensive way for them to spread happiness.
Make sure you address it correctly:
