Summer Heights High TV Series:I'd be very interested to see what Americans and Brits think of this programme. This is without doubt one of the funniest comedies I have seen. It is very Australian though so I'm interested to see if you get the humour of it as its portrayal of ordinary Australians is scarily accurate (except Mr G of course). I think it will be shown on HBO in the coming Autumn and BBC3 in the UK. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/summerheightshigh/ I think "We Can Be Heroes", the first series is even better. http://www.abc.net.au/tv/heroes/ Please keep this penciled in your diaries and let me know what you think.... O.K but you'll have to remind me nearer the time. If it's on Disney Channel there won't be a problem. I get it pumped out at high volume every evening. #1 son can say "like, whatever" and "you think?" with a Hannah Montana accent. we don't need no edukation IP: Logged |

The cringeworthy part is what makes it funny. IP: Logged |

YES!!!!They showed it here in Britain back in June. My dad has an Australian girlfriend so he tipped me off and we watched it together. I now have that and Australian of the year on DVD Chris Lilley is god haha. And yeah, I think the humour in SHH coincides perfectly with British humour. I mean, in the last decade there's been an increase in political correctness but naturally, Brits favour dark humour and things that err on the side of offensive. I mean, Little Britain is hugely popular. But whereas in the UK we'd probably laugh at the Special Ed gags I think they'd take it a little too seriously in America perhaps? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think British and Australian humour are a lot more similar to each other than to America's. But yeah anyway, love the show.... watched it ages ago otherwise I'd be quoting like mad! I will return with some favourite quotes Also, quite a fan of Kath & Kim... ...and although Kiwi and not Australian, Flight of the Conchords too. IP: Logged |

Little Britain's a bit more grosser Yes, MNF, I think you are right about Australians being similar to the Brits re senses of humour. This might be a personal bias but I think Australians are funnier and the English are wittier. With Australian comedy, when it is of champagne quality, there is a sense of freedom and brightness, there's teasing involved and makes you want to laugh out loud, your belly hurts. English humour is a bit darker, maybe meaner to the characters (ie character are tortured or torture others), constricted and wittier, its more in the head, you chuckle in your head. Basically, it represents the cultures that the humour comes from. However, saying that, there are similarities. Summer HH does remind me of the Office a bit although Summer HH is more of a character analysis and Office, relational or situational analysis. I think the problem with Americans not getting Anglo-Australian humour is that Americans are very solemn and straight forward. They mean what they say as opposed to the English and Australians. Hence the irony might be a problem for Americans to understand. I'm wondering if overseas will ever get Chaser's War On Everything? If you see it England, ressurect this thread! IP: Logged |
