Aha !! .. cheers Hippy.C

".. for spacious skies " .. yeah .. those words kept knocking ..

** It has become the country's unofficial second national anthem. **
ok connection figures :-) ..

** We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view, I felt great joy. **

must have been some view :-) .. ok i get it .. pikes peak in colorado .. yeah can imagine it ..

Yea, I suppose the US would do anything to drag her rear out of bad press now, and incorporating a 2nd anthem just does not suprize me!

Being a US citizen, the lyrics to that song are strange...yes it is quite beautiful here, but the dark undertones of a very egoistic nation saddens me....

oddities ..

whilst doodling on guitar .. playing 'when johhny comes marching home' .. for some odd reason ..
( practising scales has this effect )
starting playing this tune .. ( remembering it as 'pipe 'n drum' band )
then came the query .. is it british .. or american ..
i'd only heard it via various films ..
couldn't remember if it were redcoats .. or one of the american civil-war sides .. or what ..
recently heard it played at the queens official birthday bash .. 'trooping of the colours' ..
so .. it does originate in these isles after all ..

~ bg3.mp3~ (edit 14th july .. file now off-server )
( played by the coldstream guards )
btw it's in concert pitch and turns out to be ..
~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_British_Grenadiers ~

the americana connection remains :-)
"The tune was used by Joseph Warren, one of the leaders of the American Revolution,
when he wrote the lyrics to a song called Free Amerikay."
~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Warren ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
and IF anyone would like a copy ..
here's the 'star spangled banner ' in concert pitch ( B major )
~ ana.spb.B.aiff ~ (edit 14th july .. file now off-server )
thought i'd teach myself to play it .. i don't read music .. figure tunes by ear ..
and the version off this site ( 1953 marine corp band ) .. is not in concert pitch ( 'A' equals 440 hertz )
( ~ http://www.star-spangled-banner.info/mp3-midi-wav/ ~ )
that 'aiff' file is easy to open and 'select and repeat' various parts .. i.e. with an audio file editor ..
( j.hendrix's version is on that site as well .. somewhere .. )
i like the story on how the author was inspired to write it ..
better than 'god save the queen' .. the tune and words being anonymous ..
again .. inspired to be played publicly on certain occasions .. by a military victory ..
piscean? bluesman huh T~~~~
mmm the star spangled banner in E .. works out interesting if breaking into an F sharp blues ..
or playing F sharp minor to B .. ala carlos santana :-)
re: 'god save the queen' ..
"In September 1745 the 'Young Pretender' to the British Throne, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, defeated the army of King George II at Prestonpans, near Edinburgh. In a fit of patriotic fervour after news of Prestonpans had reached London, the leader of the band at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, arranged 'God Save The King' for performance after a play. It was a tremendous success and was repeated nightly thereafter. The words and tune are anonymous, and may date back to the seventeenth century."
weird .. that's aprox. one saturn cycle plus before the 'star spangled banner ' ..
( my astro sftwr doesn't do the 1700's )
re:
installments ok ??? ..
re:
about as close as the earth is to the edge of the universe ..
give or take a few miles .. :-)
as much as i admire their playing abilities .. i've never liked that particular version of the s.p.b.
although it makes sense in context of the times .. i.e J.H.'s version ..
here's s.p.Slim's cover mp3'd .. ( it's just under 7 meg. )
~ ana.spb.hmstrs.mp3 ~ (edit 14th july .. file now off-server )
btw: i labled that marine corp. version as 'B' .. 'cause the first 6 notes make up a B.major chord. .. i'm not really sure what the actual key signature is ..
