HoH stands for Hatred of Hairdressers. Am I the only person who feels this way?

I think I've developed a long standing issue with hairdressers. If you are a hairdresser yourself, ignore me - move along to the next thread, pretend I've apologised.

If you are not a hairdresser - please tell me I'm not nuts. They're just soooooooooo annoying. gaaaah They over-charge. My hair looks scruffy. They TALK and TALK and TALK - geez can they talk! They ask invasive questions. It never ends.

And it's not just the talking in itself that gets to me, but the things they talk about! I could have a more intelligent conversation with a 4 yr old.

I'll zip it before I get nasty.

LOL

Most people see going to the salon as kind of therapeutic and their hairstylists as some sort of shrink.

Where are you at? Have you tried a different salon or is it just your experience all around?

I've had moments at gossip mills masquerading as salons, too. But I'm happy with the one I use now. My hair always looks and feels better after a visit and the chitchat is minimal overall. Though that could just be the language barrier. I do happen to enjoy the soft, murmuring voices in Japanese even if I don't often know what they're saying. The music they play is the only thing that I could complain about. Very American top 40s kind of a thing and, for some strange reason, the sports channel on mute on the tv.

Awwww its a bit embarassing to say..i feel the same way...and i go to different places to find one i like but it doesnt happen...the reason answering this is embarassing is that right now im studying to be a qualified haidresser..hehe
I hope i can encourage people like you and i to have faith in a hairdresser again!!

I think especially a hairdresser should recognise when someone does and doesnt wanna talk...
NO GOSSIP...

I feel you CF

Hee... my hairdresser thinks I am the shy type - and that works for me because I don't want to talk to her a lot - and being "shy" is a good excuse to not speak. I just want her to do my hair and leave.

Yes, they ask personal questions and are forward. I can't stand it, so I just give one word answers and become standoffish to discourage anything that would make her talk any further with me.

Then, when she is done I become myself and smile and become a little chatty, but only because I can leave. I tip her well so that she can see that I am not being an a$$ for not being too friendly.

She's been doing my hair since high-school. She's the best at what she does, but I hate yapping and gossiping and that's what happens there.

I will find myself bursting out laughing at some of the stuff they say because some of the stories that come out there are just far-out! and they seem to like the fact that they make me laugh.

I am generally not a talker in groups. I am usually the listener and observer so now she is used to me being like that. At first she didn't understand.

I understand you and I have the solution.
Go to a female barber who knows how to cut womens hair.
They are not used to hacking off great swatches ...Oh don't worry it will grow back.....YEAH!!! at 1/2" a month!!!
They are much more refined in their techniques and tend not to be so "up themselves"
Plus they are used to having monosyllabic males sitting in the chair so don't feel the need to fill a gap with conversation.

Having said that, my ex hubby is a hairdresser and women would tell him all sorts.
The moment that head went over the backwash it was like a confessional!!
