I've stolen this idea from Virgin radio. They were asking callers "What happened when you were left in charge?" Some very funny and funny/tragic stories, one involving a guinea pig and a trampoline. Can you guess what happened? Poor pig. Well, I was left in charge on my first babysitting job, which was 4 days a week right through the summer holidays. The little girl Rachel (who was a nightmare, age 7 or so) and I made some fairy cakes, which we decided to ice in pink. I said to her "Don't touch the little bottle of food colouring will you?" and she said "No". I turn away for 5 seconds, she's got the bottle open and has flung the contents around all over the kitchen. I start to freak and cry. Enter dog, who treads in the mess and then escapes out of the kitchen to tread red all over the house, and I mean all over the house. I was not invited back the next day and have had the fear of engaging with young children ever since. What happened when you were left in charge?

One of my friends was too scared to hold my new baby (long time ago, this) because he had dropped a baby when he was 10. When he related the story behind this it sounded to me like his stepmother had been a bit silly, insisting he held her new baby when he didn't really want to ~ I suppose her interpretation was that he didn't like his new brother, when it was just a 10 year-old boy being worried about holding something small and fragile. Anyway, the happy end to the story is he plucked up the courage in the end. There's plenty of places you can hold a baby without risk of dropping him/her, it's not rocket science. The funny thing here is that he turned out to be an absolute natural with kids, they love him, he does that firm and fair thing, instant authority, but always calm. I got him helping me out babysitting a few times. If only he would get the confidence to realise what a great dad and/or children's/youth worker he would make instead of selling himself short all the time. *sigh* The red dye ~ kids make mess. So do dogs. Mess can be cleared up. If no-one comes to any personal injury it can be sorted. Precious item broken? Shouldn't have been left out on display were kids/animals/clumsy adults can break it. So don't think you are getting out of babysitting, either. Can't think of any disasters, I'll get back to you if I do. Maybe I've just been lucky? One of my kids did somersaults down the stairs once which scared the hell out of me but he didn't even cry and he didn't hurt himself. No prizes for child care skills there, but that's the kind of thing they do when your back is turned. Kind of thing I did, as well. IP: Logged |

Ah, you've restored my faith Blue. I really like little kids, I really have to try and hang out with more. I've just applied for my dream job which would mean working with kids. Fingers crossed. IP: Logged |

Well god blessed me with 6 children 5 boys...and im left in charge of them hmm we have had stiches, surgical glue, lots of blood and bandaids... Probably the most recent would be my youngest who is 5...and he decided he would move our trampoline....closer to the garage roof...climb on the fence..then jump to the garage roof and jump onto the trampoline... Well the boy ended up with a pretty damaged finger with a muti-dimensional cut...quite a bit of blood...and freaked out brothers..(which to this day we are still unsure of which part of his fun journey caused it) Well in the emergency room when explaining to the nurse what happened...well my son gave ALL the details...lol...the nurse looked at me and said he shouldnt be climbing a fence and jumping from a roof.. (Ahh well i only let them do it on thursdays!!!) I said of course...ive already talked to him about this...she still eyeballed me...so i asked...do you have children?? to which she responed...no... Then he had to have exrays and see the doctor to see if it needed stiching..when the doctor got the story from my son...who likes to tell the whole story!!! i got the same response...a funny look and a lecture about how i should be watching him and he shouldnt be jumping from a roof..well duh!!! I asked him did he have children?? No he didnt.. Hmmm..i was concerned and i take precaution..but these doctors and nurses made me feel like i was failing motherhood!! Ahhh boys!IP: Logged |

I was left in charge of a certain drive in fast food restraunt in high school. This drive in restraunt had roller skates, balloons, and a helium tank attached to the wall. Who wouldnt take advantage? I'd like to preface by saying, no ones order was harmed in any way. And our work standards were up tp par as usual. Haha. So, we filled up the balloons with soapy water and skated around while smashing them on the floor. It made clean-up a little less mundane. We also had a great time answering the box with helium voices. Hehe. Not exactly the most mature way of running the store, but hey I was seventeen. I wouldnt mind doing that again sometime. (the skates and balloons. Not working at the store) IP: Logged |
