Yes thirteen It is a huge storm and capable of much destruction. May the people seek refuge out of harms way and may the Blessed Angels guide and protect them. juni ------------------ ~ What we do for ourselves dies with us. Thank you all for your blessings.I reside in San Antonio and have been watching the darn thing. I am in healthcare so I have been oncall 24/7, for the 2nd time in as many weeks with Gustav opening the show. While FAR too many people stayed in Galveston and the SE Houston side, I have not read of any deaths, yet. It is mainly an issue of no power, to the likes of some 3 million, and help not being redily avialable for the folks who choose to stay. Most folks who stayed did it knowing what they were in for. Texans can be hard-headed and like to do things their own way, but most were prepared. There was a gas shortage in San Antonio yesterday as many of the evacuees were filtering in and tanking up. The locals were freaking out also about prices going up. I filled up both of my vehicles just to stay out of everybody's way today and tomorrow. I was/am more worried about the guys on the freighter stuck oustide of Galveston more than anything. Seems they are still in contact and alive!!! I sent those guys lots of white light last night! Again thank you for your blessings. Texans always come together and rise again, and quickly!!! IP: Logged |

The thing that really angers me, is a the last minute they lifted the mandatory evacuation of Houston!!!I could not figure that one out. Just 35 miles inshore, a hurricane of that magnitude could have never lost enough power, once hitting landfall, to not do phenomenal amounts of damage. Hope your friend is well, Firey and sending blessings to all of our coastal residents!!! IP: Logged |

After looking at the images of the disaster this morning, I sent a donation to the Red Cross. You can too: http://american.redcross.org/site/PageServer?pagename=ntld_main&s_subsrc=RCO_DonateButton&s_src=F7ZWGR00 IP: Logged |

The reason the evacuation was lifted was to avoid what happened during Hurricane Rita in 2005.The evacuation was hellish and actually killed more people than the actual storm. I'd say it was probably a good call not to evacuate all of Houston. The storm was a category two by the time it hit land, and while dangerous, it wasn't dangerous enough to need the potentially deadly evacuations. Now as far as Galveston goes, no one should have stayed behind. IP: Logged |

But by lifting the mandatory evacuation, it "lessened" the severity of the potential in the eyes of the residents.I dunno...I am far too sensitive of an individual to go back to that other thread, again. All I DO know is that I care for the sick evacuated from the hurricanes and their families and it IS REAL, the suffering. l8r friends IP: Logged |

I agree, of course their suffering is real! I have family who live in the area and I know what its like. I'm simply trying to give the reasoning behind the decision. Evacuating is far from simple. It's very expensive to evacuate, not everyone can afford it. Those who cant afford to leave, are provided help from the Red Cross, but they have to leave their homes, their posessions, often times their animals. And after they leave they're at the mercy of looters, and more damage to their homes when they arent able to get back into the city. There are stories all over the internet about people who are broke and staying in their cars. People who had evacuated earlier this month and now have no money left. Mandatory evacuations dont solve everything. Its not a simple choice. It's not always ignorance or stubborness that keep people from leaving. If you've been to Houston, you can imagine the prospect of evacuating millions of people. Some of the chaos that ensued in 2005 included a traffic jam so large that people ran out of gas and cars overheated just trying to get out. 110 people died as a direct result of the evacuation. Including a bus full of senior citizens from a nursing home whos bus burst into flames. Too many people fled that didnt need to. And thats a fact. The ONLY parts of Houston that did not have a mandatory evatuation are the ones that were the safest. It wasnt a haphazard call. I believe Mayor White had everyones best interest at heart. My father's area of Houston was not mandatory. He lost three shingles from his roof and a handful of tree branches. And from everything I've read, there have been no casualties in Houston directly relating to the storm. Now, the people who were hit the hardest definitely need help. Azalaksh pasted a link to the Red Cross. and heres a link the an organization thats very important to me and could also use the donations to help with animals in need after the aftermath of the hurricane. The Humane Society of the United States https://secure.hsus.org/01/makeadonation?qp_source=gabam3 Please dont take what Im saying personal. Im just giving my opinion. IP: Logged |
