Like it, Bunnies. Mothers sometimes seem to let rip on middle names. My husband was quite suprised to learn that my mother planted the moniker Lance on my brother: What!? like in Lancelot? He shook his head as if to say, what is the matter with her? I've often asked myself the same question, if not for the same reason. Classics from his family include Desire (with an accent on the end), the man in question is still angry about that one at the age of 70. He hates it. I don't think he has ever forgiven his granny for slipping it in at the register's office. A traditional french name for a man combines it with Marie. As in Jean-Marie Le Pen. Not being born in a catholic country I still can't get used to this one. There is an example in my family. Also in his 70s, he still can't get used to it either and requests no-one uses it unless absolutely essential. He just uses the first half of the barrel. IP: Logged |

I really love Yevgeny (Eugene, doesn't sound so nice in English) and Oleg. I also like Olga too but that doesn't count here. I also like Illya (Elijah, again not so great in English) and my favourite is Methodius. I'd love a son called that. I like Stephen too as well as John, but these names are in my family. And Alexander is just the best! IP: Logged |

23I am nearly 40, but if this subject comes up, my mother still gets upset because she had picked out the name for her daughter and told her friend the name. Her friend had a daughter and gave her the first of those names. Then she had another daughter and gave her the next name. After my brother, along I came, and my mother felt like she couldn't give me those names any more. I say: never mind, mother, I prefer the name you gave me, and anyway, I couldn't go through life being called Serena, not with my temper. It would be silly. And now, with the the french contingent on the scene, I would get called Serene, which with the accent and all sounds like gobbing up a bit of phlegm. Providence. ........... p.s The response is a bit cr@p. It wouldn't comfort my mother now, Bossy, I could do your job better, the proof's in the pudding. My mother hasn't cried over this for years.

Serena Blue Moon doesn't sound quite right to me. Serena seems pretty woosy to me. I read your BBC article before. I knew of the NZ article but the commentary was funny. I knew a Justin Case, he was my dance teacher in Grade 7. I also know a Charlie Brown. Someone I know works with a Michael Jackson. Yeah it's pretty crappy advice alright. I'm sure more of the commentators are masochistic. Probably have fantasies and dreams of being social workers at night. I'll just stick to bad kisses. IP: Logged |

I've edited my original response because I started to get annoyed. Toned it down a bit. I was starting to get into a one-way argument with bossy, planning on meeting her up for a drink somewhere I could get aggressive without the barrier of a computer screen. I'm just not a Serena. The reply shows a lack of emotional understanding, and to finish off we get that classic argument closer, 'jealousy'. As if that explains it all away. p.s the graphs ~ Mr bm put in a few research hours to check for the obscurity levels of children's names. 50 people given that name in France throughout the whole of the 20th Century was the kind of thing he was looking for ~ I wanted the name John.

Sorry to anyone excited that robyn might be about to tell us she has had her baby and his name. Just me cutting and pasting from the Daily Nation.
quote: At the Nyanza Provincial General Hospital in Kisumu, western Kenya, Barack's ancestral homeland, several mothers were naming their babies after the U.S.'s first African-American president. The mothers told Reuters Television that they wanted their babies to grow up to have the same successful traits as Obama. "I would like that by the time he is in his 40s he becomes the president of this country," said Nancy Otieno proudly of her newborn son Barack Obama. Another new mother, Millicent Akoth, named her new daughter Michelle Obama after the soon-to-be first lady.

quote: South Florida couple Patrick and Sasha Hall were reported on Wednesday to be among the first since the election to bestow the name Obama on their child, Obama Hall, according to the Miami Herald. The name Barack means blessed, according to Web site babynames.com, while Obama was the given name of his great-grandfather that became his grandfather's surname.

You know what's weird? Barack's always lived in America with an African name, but he's got a half-brother George in Kenya I believe. Seems strange.IP: Logged |
