This is one of those things where it's not really clear what the cause and effect is.

I think it is poorer people who are more likely to name their children "unique" names. Poorer people have more incentive to commit crimes, generally (not saying all poor people are criminals). The name does not cause the action. Which is why I hate statistics.

Anyway, I'm naming my son Linus, which hasn't been in the top 1000 for the past 100 years.

Unpopular, or unusual?

Well I guess I was destined for a life of crime, I don't think anyone else in this country has my name.

And I've always liked the name Ivan which I recently found out was the Russian version of "John". Random, I know, but cool.

Well my screenname is really just the combo of two Latin words but I never thought of them as actual names...interesting. I think Dulce would be a sweet nickname though (no pun intended) for a child or loved one.

It's funny, because looking at the kids in my children's classes, it's always the same names that cause trouble. I'm sure teachers see this frequently. I've had that discussion with our family doctor and he definitely sees patterns in names. But they are the very very common names.

My children have uncommon names - not unusual ones. I'm not a big fan of subjecting people to a lifetime of Sputnik or PapSmear Jones. I don't mind unusual names, but some are just too much - cruel for the kids. I figure that some of the parents are attention-seekers.

I knew of a girl named Shi-thead.
It was pronounced Shih-thayed.
However remove the hyphen from the poor unfortunate girl's name...

From the original article:

quote:
While the names are likely not the cause of crime, the researchers argue that "they are connected to factors that increase the tendency to commit crime, such as a disadvantaged home environment, residence in a county with low socioeconomic status, and households run by one parent."

"Also, adolescents with unpopular names may be more prone to crime because they are treated differently by their peers, making it more difficult for them to form relationships," according to a statement released by the journal's publisher. "Juveniles with unpopular names may also act out because they consciously or unconsciously dislike their names."

The findings could help officials "dentify individuals at high risk of committing or recommitting crime, leading to more effective and targeted intervention programs, the author conclude.

Oh, yeah. Name profiling, the new war on crime.

New? Maybe, maybe not.
My family has many German names.
During WW2, and for a time after... having a German name was a reason for the English named folk to be paranoid of the folks with very German names.
Even in the late 1950s and all the 1960s...
I would get called a big fat Nazi for my last Name.
