Unfortunately I believe my parents would've probably passed the violin player by like everyone else. I don't think I would've, I do care if I'm late but not as much as my parents do. Frankly if we're already late to something why does it matter so much if we're a few seconds more late. I understand if a plane is leaving but school, work, the movies, a party... we can make up for lost time later.

I would have stopped and watched and heard him.

No Doubt.

I love Santa Cruz, they always have fifteen different musicians on the Pacific Garden Mall.

I'd like to think that I would have stopped to listen. I do try to take the time to appreciate beauty no matter how busy I am.

I must say that some people do stop for the street performers and even tip them.

Guess we're all in Good Company.

quote:
Sometime in the early 1980's, while a student at UCLA, I met Linda in Westwood Village.

It was a chilly night. I was sitting on a block wall on the west side of the village (scraping my memory here...it's been a long time since I thought of this), hanging out with a couple street musicians (friends) who were performing for their supper.

Linda walked up to listen to the music and then engaged us in conversation. I cannot remember the particulars, what was said, etc. I remember that she and I connected at some level, even in an otherwise random social interaction. She had a man with her, but I never could tell if he was a date, a lover, a guard, a driver or a friend. He left and returned carrying four large documents (basically, a letter-sized paper bound in four volumes from 1.5" to 4" thickness) and presented me with a manuscript of Gooberz. She even signed it for me (though she miss-spelled my name, then got it right).

All the time when I lived in Austin. But also a lot of people just holding sign will work for food or please help asking for a handout

Currently a mile or so from where I live there is a guy(55-60yo) who stands out by a big 4lane heavily trafficked street. He is wildly dressed with a tall hat and he plays sometime saxaphone and sometimes trombone.
The are a couple or restaurants, one near the road and one back further from the road in the strip mall. They don't pay him to help draw attention in their direction but they do treat him well.He is there everyday.
People turn into the parking lot, disrupting there journey and drive where they can get close to him where it is safe to stop.
I don't know how much he collects but he is always there. I have only tipped him once I guess.
It is not like just walking buy someone playing, but I guess after people drive by 50 times maybe they pull in to the massive parking lot and make there way as if they owe him for all the times they heard him when they caught the light red. I think a lot of the people who stop really haven't heard that much as the light is short, but they appreciate that he is doing something.
I have talked to him waiting for the bus, he is poor but he is very happy.
