The Talmud concludes with this narrative: Alexander arrived at the gate of paradise and asked that it be opened to him. "Only the just can enter here," came the reply. "I am a renowned king; present me with something." A little ball was given to him. He put it in a scale; and it outweighed all the gold and silver in his possession. In his astonishment he turned to the rabbis, who explained to him that it was an eyeball, which could never be satiated; but if covered with a handful of dust (buried) it would weigh nothing. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?letter=A&artid=1120 Alexander the Great was not ready for this wisdom. But some of us have realized that material prosperity doesnt make a person happy, and may even be a real hinderance to happiness. We can all think of people who seem to have it all and are still unsatisfied. But only some of us realize that when the hungers of the body are appeased, the hungers of the soul begin to stir. What is it that really makes us happy? Isn't it the feeling of connecting heart-to-heart with another being?? Perhaps this story from the Talmud can teach many of us, and remind the rest of us, what is really important in life. Overfeeding the body, and lavishing attention on material amusements is no way to satisfy and acknowledge the needs of the soul.
What we all really want and need is love.
