I'm looking for some collective thoughts on voodoo-- the real kind, not Hollywood hocus pocus.

Is it evil? Can it be used for good? Do you have any personal experience with it?

Please share! I'm planning a trip to New Orleans and I'm intrigued!

I've only experienced 2 believers, and one was crazy and the other not very likable. However, I don't let them give it all a bad name.

This site here shares what little I know of it (minus a few trivial details) with a lot more that I didn't know, so I'll just leave a link here:

Thanks, Dervish. I'll let you know when I check out the link. (Which should be soon.)

I know of a love ritual that can be performed for a couple that "entwines their souls forever," and it got me wondering if this is a bad thing to do... like would it interfere with karma, or would the decision to have the ritual performed be part of a couple's karma?

From my very limited (and recent) experience, voodoo seems very loving and intentional when used for good.

I'm not interested in taking it up myself, but I am fascinated with those who do.

Lucky me! I got a quick break and was able to check out the link just now. Interesting information.

I wish your real-life experiences with voodoo were more pleasant. Good for you to keep an open mind!

Voodoo's not evil. Neither is hoodoo. But there is gray magic there - a real matter-of-fact attitude about it.

I lived in New Orleans for a number of years and was really intrigued (initially). Did the whole Marie Leveau tour thingie, which was cool....but don't get sucked into the illusions of the voodoo magic advertisements. Read up on the history first. It's pretty rich and diverse.
The slaves in New Orleans had to work their butts off and fight really hard to be able to practice their own religion, and Congo Square was basically where they met up on Sundays. Along the way, Catholicism became mixed with Voodoo when it was brought in by the slaves, so it morphed and changed.
There used to be a high priestess called Miriam - voodoo priestess - in New Orleans. She did a bone reading for me, it was kind of silly. She got some stuff right, but was off. Still, she's a nice woman, and a very intriguing figure. See if she's around, and if she is, pay her a visit. She's not in the best area of town, so be careful. She's an expert on Voodoo, and had a cool house. This was like 10 years ago, so I have no idea if she's even there or alive anymore or what.

Are you going for Jazz Fest? It's coming up soon! That's usually the best time to visit...New Orleans is an amazing place and will always be close to my heart

Also, check out Mules and Men by Zora Neale Hurston. It was written back in the 20's I think, when she was an apprentice for Voodoo.

Voodoo/Voudoun is NOT a 'loving' practice necessarily. They might try to 'sell' you that to make it seem more palatable, but it's VERY GRAY. One of their main goddesses is one of Chaos and Change....that should tell you how sweet they are
There's definitely a dark element, but it's not bad. It's not 'good' either. Just is.

I just found Priestess Mariam's page/The Voodoo Temple: http://www.voodoospiritualtemple.org/

more info: http://www.geocities.com/BourbonStreet/6157/VoodooInfo.html

Be careful of spells that entwine, they can backfire and wind up screwing you over. A love spell can be done that doesn't mess with Free Will, but a spell to entwine can go bad.

Great info, MVM.

I just found Miriam's link last night and added it to my list of things to do. We're not going until October, so I'll miss the Jazz Fest.

I'll be there for three days-- as a former local, what would you suggest as must dos?

Just checked my library-- they don't have that book, but I'll try to get my hands on it.

What do you do ? You EAT!! LOL. Seriously amazing food over there. If you're in the French Quarter, go to Cafe Du Monde and have the beignets. Stay away from Bourbon street for food....really over-priced, and the food's not all that great. Go to Snug Harbor on Frenchmen street (great bars around there too). There's also Galatoire's which can be pretty pricey and the lawyers have their happy hour there ...but the food is incredible.

Garden District and Uptown there's a ton of places (I have friends working at) that you should try if you get the chance. Try Herbsaint, Lilette (amazing French/Italian bistro...kind of upscale), De Longpre wine bar (great wine and tapas), and this place: http://www.uglesichs.com/ for traditional New Orleans cuisine ...wonderful food.

This would be a long list. I'll compile something for you over the next few days...but definitely EAT and see some live music. New Orleans is an amazing place, especially once you get away from the tourist-y places.

Awesome! My goal when traveling is to get away from the touristy places and check out the local scene.

I look forward to your list!

I would love to ask a Haitian! Unfortunately, I don't see many around my neighborhood.
