Cosmic Hand Reaches for the Light By SPACE.com Staff posted: 04 April 2009 10:37 am ET Tiny and dying but still-powerful stars called pulsars spin like crazy and light up their surroundings, often with ghostly glows. So it is with PSR B1509-58, which long ago collapsed into a sphere just 12 miles in diameter after running out of fuel. And what a strange scene this one has created. In a new image from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, high-energy X-rays emanating from the nebula around PSR B1509-58 have been colored blue to reveal a structure resembling a hand reaching for some eternal red cosmic light. The star now spins around at the dizzying pace of seven times every second -- as pulsars do -- spewing energy into space that creates the scene. Strong magnetic fields, 15 trillion times stronger than the Earth's magnetic field, are thought to be involved, too. The combination drives an energetic wind of electrons and ions away from the dying star. As the electrons move through the magnetized nebula, they radiate away their energy as X-rays. The red light actually a neighboring gas cloud, RCW 89, energized into glowing by the fingers of the PSR B1509-58 nebula, astronomers believe. The scene, which spans 150 light-years, is about 17,000 light years away, so what we see now is how it actually looked 17,000 years ago, and that light is just arriving here. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers). http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/090404-chandra-nebula.html

The hand looks like it is reaching up to heal a bleeding wound to me. That woman one is astounding too. Thought it was fake on first glance. Thought "noooo wayyy", that actually has air brushed wings or something, but then I looked a second time. The last ones bring the beginning of "It's A Wonderful Life" to mind.

You'd be amazed how many are compelled to call some of the images that. This one too, a regular shot of the Helix Nebula...

My older 'save' file doesn't have the real names in allot of cases. I regret that. And the 'net' posters tend to add their own, unfortunate. Here are some more in the file.. The infamous 'Finger'

Lady Node ~Love that 2nd 10:12 pm image (as you can see below)!! I saved a bunch of Hubble images to play with, as they lend themselves well to fiddling in Photoshop kindergarten, making interesting backgrounds..... I'll post a few more in my KTAA thread, but for now: Helix Nebula..... IP: Logged |

Don't have the galaxy appellation for this one..... NGC4438..... And my favorite, the Eagle Nebula..... All of those were made by simply taking the original Hubble shot, flipping it 180 degrees horizontally and vertically, and positioning (mirroring) them together in a square..... IP: Logged |
