I love the subtle but distinct difference betwixt a simile and a metaphor ! 1. Comparing Sunshine Simile: Your smile is like sunshine on a rainy day. Metaphor: You are the sunshine of my life.In general, similes are more poetic statements and metaphors are more hyperbolic ones. If you want to flatter someone you can choose either a simile or metaphor, depending on how extreme your feelings are. 2. Comparing Life Simile: Life is like a box of chocolates. Metaphor: Life is a highway, and I want to ride it all night long. The words “like” and “as” usually distinguish similes from metaphors. Wondering if something is a simile? Just check for the words “like” or “as” and if you see them, chances are you have a simile. 3. Comparing Foxes Simile: He’s as sly as a fox Metaphor: He’s a fox! When it comes to similes and metaphors, a few small words can change the meaning of a sentence drastically. Choose your words carefully when you’re describing someone or something using a simile or metaphor, or you just might end up saying something you don’t intend! http://www.grammarly.com/blog/2014/rhetorical-devices-for-dummies-making-comparisons/ ________________ NOTE: This applies to Lexigramming also! quote: a few small words can change the meaning of a sentence drastically.
Hence the rule of; NEVER ADD WORDS OR LETTERS THAT ARE NOT FOUND WITHIN THE PHRASE OR NAME BEING LEXIGRAMMED. The smallest of invalid letter/word additions can change the meaning of ones creation in subtle and even radical ways. ------------------ NumeroLexigrams ~I remember, therefore I am immortal ~Lexxigramer Click here to read My Lexigramming Biography/over 1/2 a century to date Lexigramming IP: Logged |

People confuse those all the time. I hear the term metaphor thrown around when it's not.IP: Logged |

She's a great teacher. You can't expect everyone to know everything. Now if she were an English teacher, that would be different.IP: Logged |
