an article doing the news rounds in australia is surely worth a mention here, I have practiced permaculture in the past and have all the books, and i think i'm safe to mention this as the news article said his idea for PURIFYING WATER is deliberately not patented in the hope those who can make it and need it will use it. especially in light of recent world events. as follows clay mixed with coffee grounds (or similar organic material) and shaped into large cylinder shaped cups, then they are dried and kilned in cow dung piles which are lit. finished product can filter water because of the tiny porous holes left from the coffee grounds. I don't think anything like this was included in any of Bill's books, I think it's a brilliant idea.IP: Logged |

Coool! Thanks for the tip, raihs! Have you gotten to read the new book called The Earth Care Manual? It just came out last August and I'm hoping to get it soon. It focuses on permaculture in temperate climates so I'm really curious to check it out. I'm moving back to Fairbanks, Alaska in a few months and I'm abit uncertain as to how to apply some aspects of permaculture to such a cold climate.. IP: Logged |

He should still patent it before someone steals it. ------------------ "Never mentally imagine for another that which you would not want to experience for yourself, since the mental image you send out inevitably comes back to you." Rebecca Clark IP: Logged |

Hi Harpyr, I havent read the book you mentioned, and unfortunately I wont get around to it in a while either. I've been back in the city for nearly 2 years now and have had to leave the bush and garden and all of that behind. My books are all in storage, hanging on to that dream.....one day i'll be back in the wild. I havent had any experience with the cold weather and permaculture, but swaling comes to mind in your situation. (undulating gardens rather that flat ones) to alter micro climate. Best of luck lucky duck! keep me posted please. How remote is your place going to be? Are you going there with family? or is it a solitary thing?------------------ If i only end up being a notch on your bedpost, let it be a notch with a smiley face /:) IP: Logged |

Hi raihs!Hopefully I'll be getting my hands on that books in the near future and when I do I'll be sure to fill you in on how it is. I'm going to be moving into an urban area. Downtown Fairbanks, really. All of my family and my fiance's family live in Fairbanks and that's why we are moving back. I'll be renting my mother's spare house and it has a bit of a yard that I'm really excited about having free reign over. It'll be the first time I'm free (pretty much) to do whatever I want with a piece of property so I'm really really excited to do some permaculture stuff. I'll have to give that undulating garden a try...Thanks for the great suggestion! I hope you get a chance to get back to the wilds soon, raihs. It's so great to have another permaculture person around here! IP: Logged |

hI Harpyr, Your sooo lucky, I loved hearing of your good fortune for your future, I'm excited for you! It's kind of like having a blank canvas and nature will be your palett, so much planning you must have in the pipeline and satisfaction of calling somewhere 'home'. I remember the same feeling from when I had a chance to do something similar, I spent every minute outside in the orchard, veges, herbs, chookyard etc.. hope the moving goes really well for you both and I bet your families are thrilled to have you back.
