Put rocks around painted as strawberries, so birds will leave the real strawberries alone when they grow.

So... there are 3 types of strawberries: June-bearing, everbearing, and Alpine. June-bearing strawberries don’t necessarily ripen in June, but their growth habit definitely leans toward a shorter harvest window of larger fruits. Alpine strawberries will keep making smaller fruits over a much longer season, and make clumps instead of spreading runners. Everbearing is somewhere in between.
So, if you know which kind you have, you know how best to let them grow. The thing is, while the plant is technically perennial, it only has a year or two in which it will bear fruit in significant quantities. But the awesome thing is, they will reproduce genetic clones of themselves! It’s easiest to see with the June-bearing type; after fruiting they’ll send out these long creeping tendrils that will grow leaves and put down roots about 6 inches away from the mother plant; sometimes a single runner will keep extending to 3 or 4 clones. Eventually the connecting stems will dry up; once they do you can go in and pull out the older plants (ones with root crowns as thick as a finger). It’s trickier with the clump-forming types, but the same thing is going on, and September-October is the perfect time of year to carefully tease apart the clumps and discard the old, woody crowns. Then you can give some love to the soil and re-plant the healthiest bits, but not too deep! The tip of the root crown where the leaves emerge has to be exposed to the air.
