I have a couple of potted Bouganvilleas growing on our balcony (only space for a garden just now) and they were growing and blooming nicely until the weather turned hotter and then cooled again. That's when the aphids moved in. I water the plants and then let them almost dry out as all my books say and they are in full sun. I tried the soap and water spray thing repeatedly for the aphids and still no luck. As if by magic, a couple of ladybugs showed up (3rd floor apartment on a busy street and there they were!) and started feasting. I found another one on the steps and brought her back, too. Anyway, most of the aphids are gone and I haven't seen the ladybugs, either. How do I get rid of the remaining aphids? Also, am I supposed to prune off all the affected leaves even if one plant is left almost bare? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. IP: Logged |

Eleanor,Get some cigarettes, use one or two, and some hot peppers(the hottest you can find), and garlic. Boil it all up for about 15 minutes, and then let step for 15. Strain out the particles, and then after it cools, pour into a spray bottle. Use that daily until the aphids are gone. That's what we use for pests, and they really dislike it I'm not sure about pruning though. ------------------ After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley IP: Logged |

Thanks for the suggestion, goatgirl! I've been doing that since you posted here and I have noticed that there are very few aphids left! Today I saw only 1. I'm going to do it a couple more days until I'm sure I don't see any. They aren't showing up on any other plants either, so that's great. I also decided not to prune the plants but just to remove the most affected leaves. They look like they're hanging on and I've got my fingers crossed. Thanks again! IP: Logged |

Yay for toxins!!! The nicotene is a powerful one (and people wonder why smokes make them feel bad...). ANother is the pyrethrum chrysanthemum. And rotenone sp? is good for chewing insects, like grasshoppers, grubs etc. ------------------ After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music." - Aldous Huxley IP: Logged |
