Aw , thanks Mirage. that is some sweet info. So glad you enjoyed the vid I can`t watch it but PBS and the Nature program showed it when they ran a week long special on Hummingbirds. ------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

I had to share! I was watching animal planets "when animals go bad" and it showed 3 hummingbirds hovering at a feeder. On the feeder ledge was a large praying mantis. One hummer saw it and dive bombed it then seemed to forget he was there. The second bird came in to drink and the mantis nailed it. It was so fast, it was a blur of flying feathers. In slow mo it showed the mantis caught the hummer by his feathers. After a tussle both escaped intact and alive. Whew They are cannibals so why not eat hummers ------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

omigosh!! You know, I wondered about that before? When I saw my first hummingbird, I thought it was a GIANT bug-- like a cicada or a jurasic flying roach? I wondered what a Mantis would do! Size matters? Thanks for sharing! IP: Logged |

Mantis`s are so creepy. I weed a sedium with yellow flowers bed. For some reason the mantis like to lay their eggs in it. The babies are even creepy.------------------ Partial truth~the seeds of wisdom~can be found in many places...The seeds of wisdom are contained in all scriptures ever written… especially in art, music, and poetry and, above all, in Nature.

Agree about mantis... I've had my face really really close looking at them gripped to a screen door!It was illegal to harm them, where I was from. It's a good thing they have the word "praying" in front of mantis. Gives a different and more-accepting way to feel about them. yt keeps feeding me more hummingbird videos. Saw some that showed hummingbirds fully asleep and 'hanging upside' down from the feeder-- upside down like little bats do. LOL The go into a state of sleep that is quite profound, called torpor. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpor "The metabolism of hummingbirds can slow at night or at any time when food is not readily available: the birds enter a hibernation-like, deep-sleep state (known as torpor) to prevent energy reserves from falling to a critical level. During night-time torpor, body temperature falls from 40 to 18 °C, with heart and breathing rates both slowed dramatically (heart rate to roughly 50 to 180 beats per minute from its daytime rate of higher than 1000). During torpor, to prevent dehydration, the GFR ceases, preserving needed compounds such as glucose, water, and nutrients. Further, body mass declines throughout nocturnal torpor at a rate of 0.04 g per hour, amounting to about 10% of weight loss each night. The circulating hormone, corticosterone, is one signal that arouses a hummingbird from torpor. Use and duration of torpor vary among hummingbird species and are affected by whether a dominant bird defends territory, with non-territorial subordinate birds having longer periods of torpor. - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hummingbird Take Care IP: Logged |
