Random tidbit: I just learned that the pointy galls you sometimes see on witch hazel leaves are not made by wasps as I always assumed, but by aphids! The interesting part is, they have a 7-year reproductive cycle: they lay their eggs in galls on birch trees for 6 years, then migrate to witch hazel for the seventh, with the adults of each generation taking on a slightly different morphology. Wild, huh?IP: Logged |

^^The above is from the Peterson Field Guide to Eastern Forests, btw. Funny enough, just the other day I was thinking I ought to add a note here about the smoke from black walnut wood also being very bad to inhale. Another useful tidbit re: firewood — Source for this one is a book called Farming the Woods, by Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel.Species BTUs when dry (20%) Hickory 27.7 Eastern Hornbeam 27.3 Black Birch 26.8 Black Locust 26.8 Apple 26.5 White Oak 25.7 Sugar Maple 24-29 Red Oak 24 Beech 24 White Ash 23.6 Yellow Birch 23.6 Hackberry 20.8 Birch (not black) 20.3 Walnut 20.3 Cherry 20 Black Cherry 19.9 American Elm 19.5 Black Ash 19.1 Red or Soft Maple 18.7 Sycamore 18.5 Box Elder 17.9 Conifer average 16.5 Aspen 14.7 Butternut 14.5 Willow 14.5 Basswood 13.5 Cottonwood 13.5 IP: Logged |
