"You are right," said Pangloss, "for when man was first placed in the Garden of Eden, he was put there ut operaretur eum, that he might cultivate it; which shows that man was not born to be idle.""Let us work," said Martin, "without disputing; it is the only way to render life tolerable." The whole little society entered into this laudable design, according to their different abilities. Their little plot of land produced plentiful crops. Cunegonde was, indeed, very ugly, but she became an excellent pastry cook; Paquette worked at embroidery; the old woman looked after the linen. They were all, not excepting Friar Giroflée, of some service or other; for he made a good joiner, and became a very honest man. Pangloss sometimes said to Candide: "There is a concatenation of events in this best of all possible worlds: for if you had not been kicked out of a magnificent castle for love of Miss Cunegonde: if you had not been put into the Inquisition: if you had not walked over America: if you had not stabbed the Baron: if you had not lost all your sheep from the fine country of El Dorado: you would not be here eating preserved citrons and pistachio-nuts." "All that is very well," answered Candide, "but let us cultivate our garden." IP: Logged |

The grapevines are starting to leaf out, and the latest daffodils are blooming around them. I don’t know what they’re called, but the blooms are small and white and usually 2 per stem, with very small yellow and green cups in the center. They’re not quite as pretty as my favorite variety, ‘Erlicheer,’ but they smell every bit as good. IP: Logged |

Claude Monet. A great artist whose work gave the movement of Impressionism its name. This extraordinary work was painted when Monet was just 26 years old. It depicts Jeanne-Marguerite Lecadre, the young wife of his cousin Paul-Eugene Lecadre in the garden of their house... Woman in the Garden (1867) / by Claude Monet

As I was driving earlier today, my eyes caught this incredible sight of those exact immensely red poppies in a clearing a few metres away from home and I remembered Monet's Marguerite... I will definitely stop by tomorrow to touch them...IP: Logged |

One of the three peonies are blooming (and it does smell good!) So are the blue flag iris in the wetland garden, and the roses and phlox in the backyard. I’ve transplanted a bunch of vegetable seedlings, divided the horseradish and elecampane, added a couple of shrubs to the border, and made some progress on containing the forsythia hedges. I pick aphids off the peas and slugs off the strawberries every morning. (That’s the kind of job that should really be delegated to chickens.) IP: Logged |

The fireflies are out. I had to kill a baby copperhead yesterday. IP: Logged |

The Oriental lilies I planted 2 years ago are blooming for the first time. Earlier this spring there was a turtle hanging out under the grapevines for about a week, and yesterday while I was weeding that area I found a little silver turtle pendant with multi-colored rhinestones laying on the ground.IP: Logged |

I’m trying to grow a little bit of cotton this year. The flowers are really pretty— white when they first open, then the petals start turning pink on the second day. 5 petals, goes well with marshmallow, hibiscus and okra.IP: Logged |

Yesterday it finally rained. The day before I saw several monarch butterflies. There are 6-ish hummingbirds that have been hanging around since early August. They were alarmed when I cut down a large swath of jewelweed under the chestnut tree. Some of the most useless and flamboyant shade plants are blooming around the bench right now— colchicum, sternbergia, toad lily, sedum and hardy begonias making little dots of pink, purple and yellow. The asters are just starting to bloom, and the camellia grew a foot taller this year.IP: Logged |

That one cold night killed the cucumbers/squash/gourds and basil, and did a little bit of damage to tomatoes and Lima beans. I’m planning to plant garlic on the 10th, working on a new strategy that will allow me to fertilize with bone meal without worrying about my dog tearing everything up.IP: Logged |

Almost forgot, I got a good harvest of shiitakes over the weekend and found a clump of lion’s mane growing too high up a maple tree to reach. And saw both a red-tailed and probably a red-shouldered hawk this afternoon.IP: Logged |
