When I heard the news today this caught my attention... Proxima Centauri, the nearest star to the sun hosts a planet, an Earth-sized planet, Proxima b, which is in the right location to -possibly- support life... "It is the closest known exoplanet to the Solar System, as well as the closest potentially habitable exoplanet known." An excerpt of an article:
"The search for life outside our solar system has been brought to our cosmic doorstep with the discovery of an apparently rocky planet orbiting the nearest star to our sun. Thought to be at least 1.3 times the mass of the Earth, the planet lies within the so-called “habitable zone” of the star Proxima Centauri, meaning that liquid water could potentially exist on the newly discovered world. Analysis Proxima b will be our prime laboratory in the search for extraterrestrial life The discovery of a rocky planet in the habitable zone around our sun’s nearest star is just the beginning of decades of intense research and exploration Read more Named Proxima b, the new planet has sparked a flurry of excitement among astrophysicists, with the tantalising possibility that it might be similar in crucial respects to Earth." from theguardian.com There's nothing for sure, but there seems to be potential for liquid water to exist on the surface of Proxima b, so for it to be a "twin planet" of our wonderful Earth (that is, by the way, unique, but the splendor of the Universe is infinite...)

Yes maybe also on Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons, ithas an icy surface and it emits jets of gas that may harbor liquid water. They hope to find some bacteria there and I've heard they are going to send a space probe to collect information. IP: Logged |
