I’ve got a wad of weeds wrapped around my bloody knuckle right now. Broadleaf plantain (Plantago major) — a weed that grows everywhere; aka ‘white man’s footsteps.’ If you buy psyllium husks to use as a dietary fiber supplement, those are the seeds of a related and equally common’weed’. Some of the oldest human remains found in Northern Europe were carrying pouches of this stuff! I consider it more medicine than food, but apparently you can cook and eat the leaves as well.IP: Logged |

Best book I know on how to actually use wild edibles is called Bootstraps and Biscuits. It’s not a field guide for identification though.IP: Logged |

This time of year: chickweed, pennycress, dandelion, garlic mustard, pokeweed, violet, redbud flowers. The pokeweed has to be cooked in 2 changes of water.IP: Logged |

I had a fantastic meal with lots of wild food this weekend— we made pesto with chickweed, ramps and garlic mustard; potato and watercress soup (it grows wild in slow-moving creeks); lentils and sautéed nettles; salad with redbud, violet and dandelion flowers (and hot dogs and chocolate). Morels are up now too (though I’ve yet to find any myself).IP: Logged |

Daylily (Hemerocallis) is edible too. When they’re blooming you can put the flower petals in a salad or cook the buds like squash blossoms, and when it’s time to divide and transplant you can pick up to half the tubers off each plant and cook them like potatoes.IP: Logged |
